INTEGRATED OPTICAL CIRCULATOR APPARATUS, METHOD, AND APPLICATIONS

An optical circulator is a device that routes optical pulses from port to port in a predetermined manner, e.g. in a 3-port optical circulator, optical pulses entering port 1 are routed out of port 2, while optical pulses entering port 2 exit out of port 3 and optical pulses fed into port 3 exit out of port 3. Currently such an optical circulator is made of discrete components such as magnetooptic garnets, rare-earth magnets and optical polarizers that are packaged together with fiber optic elements. Disclosed herein is a different kind of optical circulator that is monolithically integrated on a single semiconductor substrate and that is applicable for the routing of optical pulses. The embodied invention will enable photonic integrated circuits to incorporate on-chip optical circulator functionality thereby allowing much more complex optical designs to be implemented monolithically.

FIBER OPTIC TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND SENSING HEAD STRUCTURE

A fiber optic temperature sensor, a sensing head structure, and a manufacturing method are provided. The fiber optic temperature sensor includes a broad spectrum light source, a first fiber optic coupler, a spectrometer, a first sensing interferometer, and a second sensing interferometer. The first sensing interferometer and the second sensing interferometer have opposite temperature responses. A first free spectral range corresponding to the first sensing interferometer is close to but not equal to a second free spectral range corresponding to the second sensing interferometer. In the fiber optic temperature sensor, two sensing interferometers both sensitive to temperature are used, and the two sensing interferometers have opposite temperature responses, thereby achieving an enhanced vernier effect, and improving the sensitivity of temperature measurement.

SINGLE MODE OPTICAL COUPLER

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed toward techniques and configurations for a single mode optical coupler device. In some embodiments, the device may include a multi-stage optical taper to convert light from a first mode field diameter to a second mode field diameter larger than the first mode field diameter, and a mirror formed in a dielectric layer under an approximately 45 degree angle with respect to a plane of the dielectric layer to reflect light from the multi-stage optical taper substantially perpendicularly to propagate the light in a single mode fashion. Other embodiments may be described and/or claimed.

Nonreciprocal optical transmission device and optical apparatus including the same

Nonreciprocal optical transmission devices and optical apparatuses including the nonreciprocal optical transmission devices are provided. A nonreciprocal optical transmission device includes an optical input portion, an optical output portion, and an intermediate connecting portion interposed between the optical input portion and the optical output portion, and comprising optical waveguides. A complex refractive index of any one or any combination of the optical waveguides changes between the optical input portion and the optical output portion, and a transmission direction of light through the nonreciprocal optical transmission device is controlled by a change in the complex refractive index.

Nonreciprocal three-way divider based on a magneto-optical resonator

The present invention is based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which defects are inserted in a controlled manner, has the main function of division of the power of an input signal, excited in one of its six waveguides, among other three waveguides (output ones), while keeping isolation of the input port by means of two other waveguides. The operating principle of the device is based on the alignment of a dipole mode excited in the resonant cavity, in such a way that the nodes of this mode are oriented in the direction of two waveguides, so that these waveguides are not excited. Due to this alignment, each of the three output waveguides receive about one third of the power of input signal. The orientation of dipole mode is controlled by the applied DC magnetic field and the physical and geometrical parameters of the resonator.

A compact six-port Photonic Crystal (PhC) circulator includes a hexagonal PhC branch waveguide and six waveguide ports, wherein six PhC branch waveguides respectively correspond to the six waveguide ports, and the six waveguide ports respectively are symmetrically distributed at the periphery of PhCs. One second dielectric material column is arranged at the center of the hexagonal PhC waveguide. Six identical magneto-optical material columns respectively are arranged at first adjacent positions of the second dielectric material column. Six identical third dielectric material columns respectively are arranged at second adjacent positions of the second dielectric material column. An electromagnetic signal is inputted from any one of the waveguide ports and is outputted from the next waveguide port adjacent thereto, while the remaining waveguide ports are in a signal isolated state, thus forming unidirectional circular transmission.
