ACTIVE ALIGNMENT OF OPTICAL FIBER TO CHIP USING LIQUID CRYSTALS
Devices and systems to perform optical alignment by using one or more liquid crystal layers to actively steer a light beam from an optical fiber to an optical waveguide integrated on a chip. An on-chip feedback mechanism can steer the beam between the fiber and a grating based waveguide to minimize the insertion loss of the system.
FOCAL POLARIZATION BEAM DISPLACER
Embodiments herein describe a focal polarization displacer with a birefringent crystal disposed within the focal region of a lens. The birefringent crystal separates optical signals into at least two separate signals based on having different polarization states and an optical axis of the birefringent crystal is set so that focal points of the two separate signals are at an output surface of the polarization displacer where the two separate signals are output from the polarization displacer. This output surface can be a surface of the birefringent crystal or a surface of additional layer coupled to the crystal such as a polarization rotator or dielectric layer.
Polarization scrambler using a retardance element
A polarization scrambler using a retardance element (RE) is disclosed. The polarization scrambler may include an optical fiber input to transmit an optical signal, and a beam expander to receive and expand the optical signal to create an expanded optical signal. The polarization scrambler may include a retardance element (RE) to cause a polarization scrambling effect on the expanded optical signal and to create a scrambled expanded optical signal. The polarization scrambler may include a beam reducer to receive and reduce the scrambled expanded optical signal to create a scrambled optical signal. The polarization scrambler may include an optical fiber output to receive scrambled optical signal. The optical fiber output may transmit the scrambled optical signal to one or more downstream optical components.
OPTICAL COMMUNICATION DEVICE

An optical communication device includes, as a lens element, a liquid crystal diffractive lens element having an optically anisotropic layer that is formed using a composition containing a liquid crystal compound, and has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which an orientation of an optical axis of the liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating toward one direction, in a radial shape from an inside toward an outside, and in the liquid crystal alignment pattern, in a case where a length over which the orientation of the optical axis rotates by 180° in one direction in which the optical axis changes is a single period, a length of the single period gradually decreases from the inside toward the outside.
OPTICAL COUPLING SYSTEM AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION DEVICE
Provided are a small-sized optical coupling system and an optical communication device using the optical coupling system. An optical coupling system includes a liquid crystal optical element, and a photonic device having a plurality of photonic chips, and couples an optical fiber to the photonic device, in which each of the photonic chips includes a grating coupler, the liquid crystal optical element separates incident signal light depending on at least one of polarization or a wavelength to emit light in different directions, and each separated signal light component is incident into the grating coupler of the corresponding photonic chip.
Micro optic assemblies and optical interrogation systems
Example embodiments include an optical assembly for an optical interrogation system having a single core or a multicore sensing fiber, a measurement fiber to couple light into the sensing fiber, and a reference fiber arranged with the measurement fiber as part of an optical interferometer. A beam splitter combines light from the sensing fiber and with light from the reference fiber. A polarization beam splitting prism separates the combined light into first polarized light and second polarized light that is orthogonal to the first polarized light. The optical assembly can substantially reduce the size, complexity, or cost associated with the traditional optical components in an optical interrogation system that it replaces. Other example optical assemblies are described. Embodiments describe optical interrogation systems using the example optical assemblies.
