The delivery fiber has a length, an input end for launching light, and a delivery end. The delivery fiber includes along its length a core region and a cladding region surrounding the core region, the cladding region includes a cladding background material having a refractive index N.sub.bg and a plurality of microstructures in the form of inclusions of solid material having refractive index up to N.sub.inc and extending in the length of the longitudinal axis of the delivery fiber, wherein N.sub.inc<N.sub.bg. The plurality of inclusions in the cladding region is arranged in a cross-sectional pattern including at least two rings of inclusions surrounding the core region. The connector member is mounted to the delivery fiber at a delivery end section of the delivery fiber including the delivery end.

The structure includes: a main bus waveguide structure; a first hybrid waveguide structure evanescently coupled to the main bus waveguide structure and comprising a first geometry of material; and a second hybrid waveguide structure evanescently coupled to the main bus waveguide structure and comprising a second geometry of the material.
Optical multiplexer and RGB coupler
An optical multiplexer that extends a transmission bandwidth of light is achieved. The present invention provides an optical multiplexer constructed of a multimode waveguide to which two single mode input waveguides are connected at a distance and two single mode output waveguides connected at a distance to a surface opposite a surface to which the input waveguides of the multimode waveguide are connected, in which a width of the multimode waveguide is smaller than widths of the two input waveguides plus a distance between the input waveguides, and the input waveguides are connected to the multimode waveguide and the multimode waveguide is connected to the output waveguides via tapered waveguides, respectively.
LATERAL WAVEGUIDE PHOTODETECTOR COUPLER
A waveguide coupler includes a coupling section which evanescently couples an optical signal, received from an input waveguide, with an absorbing waveguide. Structurally, the coupling section is an elongated waveguide with one end butt-coupled to the input waveguide. Further, the coupling section defines an engagement side edge which is positioned at a predetermined distance from a dimensionally compatible side surface area of the absorbing waveguide. In this combination, evanescence from the optical signal is directed laterally from the coupling section, through the engagement side edge of the coupling section, and through an assisting component, to the absorbing waveguide for use with a photodetector.
Optical Module
An optical module capable of suppressing deterioration of an adhesive layer and having a resistance to high-power light even when high-energy light propagates is configured by connecting an optical fiber to a PLC. The optical fiber is provided with an etching face at a recessed area where a cladding region on its side face is partially removed over a length L in a light propagation direction from an input/output end connected to the PLC, and the PLC is also provided with an etching face at a recessed area where a cladding layer is partially removed over the length L in the light propagation direction from an input/output end connected to the optical fiber. The adhesive layer made of a UV cured resin is interposed between the etching faces to bond and fix the etching faces to each other, and a core of the optical fiber and a core layer of the PLC form a directional coupler for linearly dispersing energy density.
Integrated broadband optical couplers with robustness to manufacturing variation
An optical device is disclosed, including a phase delay, a first adiabatic coupler adapted to receive an input signal and adapted to be optically coupled to an input of the phase delay, and a second adiabatic coupler adapted to be optically coupled to an output of the phase delay. The second adiabatic coupler includes a first waveguide including a first portion optically coupled to the first output and including a first width, and a second waveguide including a second portion optically coupled to the second output and including a second width that is approximately equal to the first width.
Back end of line process integrated optical device fabrication
An integrated optical device fabricated in the back end of line process located within the vertical span of the metal stack and having one or more advantages over a corresponding integrated optical device fabricated in the silicon on insulator layer.
Photonic lantern structures and devices
A photonic lantern couples light from several fibers or fiber cores into one or more fibers or fiber cores. Photonic lanterns are often used to combine several lower-power beams into a single higher-power beam. They can also be used to couple light from multi-core fibers into single-mode, multi-mode, or other multi-core fibers. By modulating the phases of the input beams, the light can be switched from output to output—for example, between output cores of a multi-core output fiber. If desired, the beams can also be amplified using an active fiber in or coupled to the photonic lantern. A first photonic lantern couples signal light and pump light into the core and cladding, respectively, of an active multi-mode or multi-core fiber. And the active multi-mode or multi-core fiber couples amplified signal light into output fiber(s) via a second photonic lantern.

One illustrative backscattering generator disclosed herein includes a low-reflection waveguide structure, a slot waveguide structure comprising a first waveguide, a second waveguide and a slot located between the first waveguide and the second waveguide, and a variable direction coupler operatively coupled to the low-reflection waveguide structure and the slot waveguide structure.
MANUFACTURING METHOD AND MANUFACTURING APPARATUS OF OPTICAL SPLITTERS
A manufacturing method of an optical splitter of the present disclosure includes: performing first processing that involves mounting a coated optical fiber on a jig configured to store the coated optical fiber, and polishing the coated optical fiber together with the jig until reaching a vicinity of a core of the coated optical fiber or the core of the coated optical fiber; performing second processing that involves applying a refractive index matching material having a refractive index lower than a refractive index of the core of the coated optical fiber onto a polished face of the coated optical fiber on the jig polished in the first processing or onto a polished face of an optical waveguide circuit having been polished in advance until reaching a vicinity of a core or reaching the core, and then bonding the polished faces to each other; and performing third processing that involves positionally aligning the polished faces bonded with each other in the second processing to move the jig or the optical waveguide circuit to a position at which a desired splitting ratio is obtained.
