Tunable wavelength-selective fiber optic switch employing moveable grating interaction with the evanescent field of a partially-cladding-removed fiber

In the wavelength selective fiber optic switch, an optical fiber with a portion of cladding removed defines a window facilitating access to the radially evanescent field present when optical power is propagating through the optical fiber, defining a first transmission path. The cladding removed optical fiber, a secondary optical waveguide, and a grating structure form a grating assisted coupler. An adjustable positioning fixture changes the relative spacing of the fiber core, grating, and output waveguide between a decoupled position and a coupled position. The switch operates, in the decoupled position, to allow optical power to propagate unperturbed through the first transmission path, including optical power at said optical wavelength, and in the coupled position, to extract and reroute optical power at the optical wavelength to propagate through the second transmission path, while leaving unperturbed other wavelengths propagating through the first transmission path. A tuning mechanism is implemented that alters the periodic properties of the grating to tune to a desired optical wavelength.

A method of aligning optical signals in a fiber optic switching device with one or two phase light modulators (PLMs) includes configuring the phase elements of the PLMs with first initial settings, to direct an optical signal from an input fiber to an output fiber. An initial position displacement of a center of the signal image from a center of the output fiber is estimated. Corrected settings for the phase elements are calculated so that when the corrected settings are applied to the phase elements, a corrected signal image of the optical signal has a corrected position displacement from the center of the output fiber that is less than the initial position displacement. A fiber optic switching device has processing circuitry and a memory component configured to execute steps of the method of aligning the optical signals.

The signal processing circuitry is configured to estimate a position of the first electrode relative to the second electrode based on the sensed-waveform.

In an embodiment, an optical cross connect includes first and second mirror arrays, first and second light sources that respectively emit first and second color coded light beams (e.g., each of which includes red, green and blue light), and first and second cameras configured to respectively capture first and second color images of the first and second color coded light beams reflected respectively from the first and second mirror arrays. The optical cross connect also includes a controller configured to perform closed loop feedback control of the first and second mirror arrays, based on the first and second color images, when the controller controls how optical signals are transferred between individual optical fibers in a first bundle of optical fibers and individual optical fibers in a second bundle of optical fibers.
