A display system and method are disclosed that includes an electronic display device and a backlight comprising a light-emitting array, a reflector adjacent to the light-emitting array, a diffuser opposite the reflector, a first brightness enhancing layer adjacent the diffuser, and an optical film in the backlight unit that includes at least one light conversion material or at least one light conversion material. The light conversion material is structured and configured to reduce hazardous blue light emissions between about 400 nm to about 500 nm. The disclosed display device can include a liquid crystal panel configured to control transmission of light from the backlight to a viewer. The display device also includes one or more optical films that incorporate one or more light conversion or light absorbing materials. The optical films can be positioned between the layers of the disclosed display device and give enhanced blue-light absorption to the display device.

A liquid crystal display device (100) according to the present invention is provided with a liquid crystal display panel (10) and a backlight device (50) which emits light toward the back surface (10r) of the liquid crystal display panel. The backlight device comprises: an LED substrate (21) that has a front surface (21s) on which a plurality of LED chips (22) are arranged so as to emit excitation light toward the back surface of the liquid crystal display panel; a phosphor layer (25) which contains a phosphor (25q) that emits fluorescent light upon reception of the excitation light; a wavelength selective reflection layer (28) which is arranged between the phosphor layer and the LED substrate, and wherein the transmittance of the excitation light is higher than the transmittance of the fluorescent light; and an optical layer laminate (30) which is arranged on the liquid crystal display panel side of the phosphor layer. The optical layer laminate, the phosphor layer and the wavelength selective reflection layer are affixed to the back surface of the liquid crystal display panel in an integrated manner, with a plurality of adhesive layers including a first adhesive layer (40a) being interposed therebetween.

A liquid crystal display apparatus, includes: a light-condensing backlight unit; a liquid crystal panel including a first linear polarizer and a second linear polarizer; a light scattering film facing the second linear polarizer; and a third linear polarizer facing the light scattering film. The light scattering film includes a functional layer including an organic polymer compound and light scattering particles. The functional layer includes a particle layer in which a fraction of 60% by volume to 100% by volume of the light scattering particles included in the functional layer expands along a surface of the particle layer at which the light output from the liquid crystal panel is received, and the particle layer is concentrated to a region having a thickness of 1 to 80% of a total thickness of the functional layer, in a direction perpendicular to the contact surface.

A local-dimming display generally includes a light source configured to generate a backlight, a first display aligned with the light source and having multiple first pixels, wherein each first pixel is configured to selectively pass and block the backlight, and a second display aligned with the first display and having multiple second pixels. A particular pixel is controlled to pass the backlight. The particular pixel corresponds with an aligned pixel and multiple parallax pixels of the first pixels controlled at a first transmit level, and multiple neighboring pixels of the first pixels controlled at one or more second transmit levels. The one or more second transmit levels are less than or equal to the first transmit level. The first pixels cooperating at the first transmit level and the second transmit levels selectively presents the backlight to the second display with a declining intensity pattern in the neighboring pixels.

A film wrapping display includes a display device configured to display information in a display area by emitting light, a transparent plate disposed on a display surface side of the display device, a bezel disposed around a periphery of the display device and including a support portion that supports the transparent plate, and a film continuously attached to both of the transparent plate and the bezel. A periphery of the display area where the transparent plate is supported by the support portion is an edge portion. The edge portion includes a decorative layer whose pattern or color is different from that of the display area.

An optical system includes a lens layer including a plurality of microlenses arranged along orthogonal first and second directions, and at least one optically opaque mask layer spaced apart from the lens layer and defining a plurality of through openings therein arranged along the first and second directions. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the microlenses and the openings, such that for each microlens, the microlens and corresponding openings are substantially centered on a straight line making a same oblique angle with the lens layer. An optical layer can include the lens layer and the optically opaque mask layer embedded in the optical layer.
