An image forming apparatus includes plural image forming units and a controller. The plural image forming units are configured to form images of colors using colorants, respectively. The controller is configured to perform control such that the plural images formed by the plural image forming units are output as one image onto a recording medium. At least two of the image forming units are configured to form images using colorants of special colors, respectively and are arranged in succession.

A plurality of layers of toner particles may be electrophotographically printed, using toner cartridges, providing an imaged area that includes one or more colorant layers that include a colorant and a colorant-layer thermoplastic adhesive, and an adhesive layer that includes an adhesive-layer thermoplastic adhesive. The fusing temperature may be selected to heat the colorant-layer thermoplastic adhesive to a temperature greater than an activation temperature of the colorant-layer thermoplastic adhesive and/or an activation temperature of the adhesive-layer thermoplastic adhesive. The melting temperature, the fusing temperature, or melt flow rate of the colorant-layer thermoplastic adhesive corresponding to at least one of the one or more colorant layers may exceed the melting temperature, the fusing temperature, or the melt flow rate of the adhesive-layer thermoplastic adhesive.

An image forming apparatus includes: a first image forming portion configured to form a brilliant developer image with a brilliant developer; a second image forming portion including at least one image forming portion configured to form a developer image with at least one non-brilliant developer; and a controller configured to control operation of the first image forming portion and the second image forming portion in accordance with received print data. When the controller causes the brilliant developer image to be formed on a medium in accordance with the print data by the first image forming portion, the controller causes a black developer image to be formed between the brilliant developer image and the medium by the second image forming portion.
