The invention relates to a light modulation device having pixels. Essentially, the one half of the pixels are reflective and the other half of the pixels are transmissive. The reflective pixels are arranged in alternation with the transmissive pixels in the same substrate plane. The light modulation device also has a backplane, which has transistors and data lines for conducting signals to the pixels. Each pixel is assigned at least one transistor and at least two data lines. The transistors and the data lines of each adjacent pair of a reflective pixel and a transmissive pixel are arranged under the reflective pixel.

A method and system for reducing the effects of glare in a system comprising a picture generating unit, such as a holographic projector. The system may be a head-up display (HUD), which is configured to display a picture to a viewer, without requiring the user to look away from their usual viewpoint. The HUD system may be comprised within a vehicle. The glare in the system may be caused by light being incident on a surface comprising a screen or a window, through which the user looks at their usual viewpoint. The surface may comprise a windshield in a vehicle. The light that causes the glare may be ambient light. The method and system are provided for reducing the effects of glare in a system that comprises a waveguide in conjunction with the picture generating unit. The waveguide may be operable to act as an exit pupil expander.

OPTICAL ASSEMBLY AND METHOD FOR REDUCING ZERO-ORDER LIGHT IN A HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAY

An optical assembly is provided for use in holographic display of a replay image. The optical assembly may be of particular use is an augmented reality headset. The optical assembly includes a light-modulation element arranged to be illuminated off-axis by a light beam. The light-modulation element modulates the incident light to generate a replay image and generates a zero-order light beam. A focusing system is arranged after the light-modulation element. A light remover is positioned after the focussing system and is configured to remove the zero-order light beam from the light focussed by the focussing system. The focussing system is configured to focus zero-order light from the light-modulation element in a first plane different from a second plane which is the plane of focus of parallel light of the replay image. The light remover removes the zero-order light in the first plane.

A head mounted display (HMD) system employs a holographic element in the optical path of the HMD to direct light to a user's eye. The HMD includes a micro-display, a lightguide, and a holographic element coupled to the lightguide. The holographic element is coupled to a polarization film, and together the element and film reflect and transmit light of different polarities in a specified pattern to assist the lightguide in directing light to the user's eye. For example, the hologram and polarization film can be configured to pass R-polarized light and reflect L-polarized light, thereby directing light from the waveguide along a specified path.

HOLOGRAPHIC VIRTUAL REALITY DISPLAY

Virtual reality (VR) displays are computer displays that present images or video in a manner that simulates a real experience for the viewer. In many cases, VR displays are implemented as head-mounted displays (HMDs) which provide a display in the line of sight of the user. Because current HMDs are composed of a display panel and magnifying lens with a gap therebetween, proper functioning of the HMDs limits their design to a box-like form factor, thereby negatively impacting both comfort and aesthetics. The present disclosure provides a different configuration for a VR display which allows for improved comfort and aesthetics, including specifically at least one coherent light source, at least one pupil replicating waveguide coupled to the at least one coherent light source to receive light therefrom, and at least one spatial light modulator coupled to the at least one pupil replicating waveguide to modulate the light.
