Methods of Recording and Reproducing Holograms
Exemplary arrangements relate to methods for recording and reproducing holograms. A method of recording a hologram in a thresholded opto-magnetic medium (7) includes producing a collimated recording beam (1) with a pulsed laser. The intensity of the recording beam is selectively modulated by passage through a modulator (2). The recording beam is spatially shaped by passage through a shaping element (15). The shaped modulated recording beam is made convergent by passage through an aspheric lens (4). The convergent beam is deflected bidirectionally with a MEMS mirror (6) that is in operative connection with the modulator, such that multiple disposed locations on a surface of the medium are exposed to a constriction of the convergent shaped recording beam, causing a change in the medium in the locations. Reconstructing the hologram is carried out by illuminating the medium with a collimated laser beam and focusing with a lens, light from the illuminated medium onto a detection matrix. Additional methods of recording and reproducing holograms utilize alternative steps.
Spatial light modulator comprising a liquid crystal device having reduced stray light
The present invention relates to a controllable diffraction device for a light modulator device. The controllable diffraction device comprises at least two substrates, at least one electrode on each of said substrates facing each other, and liquid crystals forming at least one liquid crystal layer arranged between said electrodes on said substrates. The orientation of the liquid crystals is controllable by a voltage supplied to the electrodes. The liquid crystal layer is provided on at least one alignment layer arranged on at least one electrode on said substrates. The liquid crystals close to the alignment layer are pre-oriented by at least one pre-tilt angle relative to the alignment layer such that the resulting light diffraction in opposite spatial directions is approximately equal.
SAW modulators and light steering methods
An electro-holographic light field generator device is disclosed. The light field generator device has an optical substrate with a waveguide face and an exit face. One or more surface acoustic wave (SAW) optical modulator devices are included within each light field generator device. The SAW devices each include a light input, a waveguide, and a SAW transducer, all configured for guided mode confinement of input light within the waveguide. A leaky mode deflection of a portion of the waveguided light, or diffractive light, impinges upon the exit face. Multiple output optics at the exit face are configured for developing from each of the output optics a radiated exit light from the diffracted light for at least one of the waveguides. An RF controller is configured to control the SAW devices to develop the radiated exit light as a three-dimensional output light field with horizontal parallax and compatible with observer vertical motion.

Wavefront Shaping With A 1D Spatial Light Modulator
Controlling the propagation and interaction of light in complex media has sparked major interest. Unfortunately, spatial light modulation devices suffer from limited speed precluding real-time applications (e.g., imaging in live tissue). To address this problem, various embodiments use a phase-control technique to characterize complex media based on use of fast 1D spatial modulators and 1D-to-2D transformation performed by the same medium being analyzed. Some embodiments use a micro-electro-mechanical grating light valve (GLV) with 1088 degrees of freedom modulated at 350 KHz, enabling unprecedented high-speed wavefront measurements. Some embodiments continuously measure the transmission matrix, calculate the optimal wavefront and project a focus through various dynamic scattering samples in real-time, (e.g., within 2.4 ms per cycle). As such, some embodiments improve, by more than an order of magnitude, prior wavefront shaping modulation speed and open new opportunities for optical processing using 1D-to-2D transformations.
