The output signal to be checked is read in into the timer module via an input module in addition to its output via an output module, and in the input module, signal characteristics to be checked are determined for the output signal to be checked. Furthermore, the signal characteristics to be checked are read by the logic module from the input module and the signal characteristics to be checked are compared in the logic module to the predefined values for the signal characteristics.
