A portable device (e.g., a wireless device such as a cell phone) is provided with a flexible keyboard and a flexible display screen. Such flexible components may be stored in the housing of the portable device when not in use. The flexible display screen and flexible keyboard may be expanded from the housing when the flexible components are utilized by a user. Non-flexible display and input components may be provided on the exterior of the portable device such that the device may be used, in some form, while the flexible components are stored. In one embodiment, a portion of the flexible display (or flexible keyboard) may be utilized when the flexible display (or flexible keyboard) is stored in said first housing.

Systems and methods that provide audio feedback in response to gesture validity can provide a more intuitive interface that can train users to correctly complete gestures. Moreover, systems and methods that provide line-specific audio feedback can provide more specific feedback that can allow a user to better understand what sensing line is being contacted. The systems and methods can further include basing the audio feedback based at least in part on obtained activity data, such that invalid and valid feedbacks can provide different sounds dependent on the determined activity state.

System and method for detecting and responding to touch inputs with haptic feedback

One variation of a system for detecting and responding to touch inputs with haptic feedback includes: a magnetic element rigidly coupled to a chassis; a substrate; a touch sensor interposed between the substrate and a touch sensor surface; an inductor coupled to the substrate below the touch sensor surface and configured to magnetically couple to the magnetic element; a coupler coupling the substrate to the chassis, compliant within a vibration plane approximately parallel to the touch sensor surface, and locating the inductor approximately over the magnetic element; and a controller configured to intermittently polarize the inductor responsive to detection of a touch input on the touch sensor surface to oscillate the substrate in the vibration plane relative to the chassis.

HAPTIC DEVICE WITH INDIRECT HAPTIC FEEDBACK

A method of imitating a texture on a touch surface, the method including the steps of sensing a position of a user's finger on the touch surface, modulating a coefficient of friction of the touch surface in response to the sensed position of a user's appendage relative to the touch surface and/or a derivative thereof, where the friction modulator does not alter the contour of the touch surface in a manner that is perceptible to a user's sight or touch.

Touch-based device with interlaced electrode grids

A touch screen display includes a plurality of sets of electrodes facilitating touch sense functionality based on electrode signals having a drive signal component and a receive signal component. Each set of electrodes includes a corresponding proper subset of non-neighboring ones of a plurality of row electrodes and a corresponding proper subset of non-neighboring ones of a plurality of column electrodes. The row electrodes and the column electrodes form a plurality of cross points. The touch screen display further includes a plurality of sets of drive-sense circuits, where each set of drive-sense circuits is operable to generate a proper subset of a plurality of sensed signals indicating variations in capacitance associated with a proper subset of the plurality of cross points formed by a corresponding set of electrodes. The touch screen display further includes a processing module operable to process the plurality of sensed signals identify a user interaction.
