DEVICE, SYSTEM, AND METHOD FOR CARD SKIMMING PROTECTION

A card reader's motorized transport is controlled by firmware of the reader so as to control a distance that any card can be pulled into the reader during a transaction on a host device. The distance is sufficient enough to allow an embedded chip on the card to be read by a chip read interface but is insufficient to be read by a magnetic read interface. Furthermore, the entire length of the card is prevented from completely passing over the magnetic read interface during the transaction such that any skimmer placed within the reader is physically unable to read the magnetic card information from the magnetic strip of the card. In an embodiment, the firmware is configured to permit only chips from the cards to be read for transactions or configured to turn off chip only reading by permitting both chip reads and magnetic strip reads for each transaction.

A memory card reader body has a generally rectangular parallelepiped shape and a slot for inserting a memory card. The reader body furthermore includes a housing for receiving a memory card connector, and at least one protection circuit. The body includes an upper lid and a lower lid, where the protection circuit is positioned on an internal face of the upper lid.

Card insertion unit and card reader

A card insertion unit is provided, which prevents the mixture of lights in different colors even with light sources to emit lights in different colors at the periphery of a card insertion slot. A card insertion unit, having a card insertion slot through which a card is inserted, includes: a plurality of light sources provided to surround the card insertion slot, when viewed in an insertion direction of the card, with a light emitting unit facing in a direction opposite to the insertion direction so as to each emit lights in multiple colors; a translucent cover member that is provided with the card insertion slot and is overlapped with the light sources in the direction opposite to the insertion direction; and a reflective member provided between the light sources and the card insertion slot to reflect light that is to travel from the light sources toward the card insertion slot.

A card connector is provided for receiving an inserted card module. The card connector includes a housing including a terminal holding portion for arranging terminals to make contact with electrode pads on the card module. Each terminal includes a base portion held by the terminal holding portion and a cantilevered arm portion extending from the base portion in an inclined direction relative to the transverse direction of the housing. Each arm portion includes a curved portion and a pair of inclined portions. The curved portion has a curved profile with a curved surface positioned so the center of curvature is positioned above. The inclined portions are inclined relative to the extension direction of the arm portion on both sides of the apex portion positioned at the free end. The inclined portions each have a different angle of inclination relative to the extension direction of the arm portion.

Electronic access control device

Embodiments of the present invention provide an improved access control unit with an asymmetric transmission pattern. A shielded backplate reduces the interior transmission pattern. The secure side transmission pattern is much smaller than the unsecure side transmission pattern, such that a credential located within the secure side area of a building is not likely to trigger the access control unit, thus reducing the risk of an unauthorized access.
