In response to determining that the image data has the at least one predetermined indicia, the method includes determining whether the at least one predetermined indicia corresponds to at least one invalidation mark on the identification document, and, in response to determining that the at least one predetermined indicia corresponds to the at least one invalidation mark, determining, that the identification document is invalid. In response to determining that the identification document is invalid, the method includes preventing or causing the prevention of at least one action from being performed. A system and computer program product for authenticating identification documents are also disclosed.

A method and apparatus for evaluating the fitness of an object based on determination of a measure of permeability of the object, including positioning the object between a fluid source and a gasochromic material, dispensing a fluid from the fluid source towards the object such that at least a portion of the fluid flows through the object and contacts the gasochromic material, exciting the gasochromic material with an excitation source such that an emission of the gasochromic material is in response to the excitation source and the fluid, detecting the emission from the gasochromic material to determine the permeability of the object, and evaluating the fitness of the object based on the determination of the permeability of the object. The gasochromic material may also be included in the object.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining if an item of media is invalid. The method includes providing an ultrasound image of an item of media, determining a plurality of regions of the image that satisfy a pre-determined condition and determining that an item of media is invalid if the location of said regions satisfies a pre-determined condition.
