Helmholtz resonators with broadband capability
A method of using an acoustic resonator including receiving at a first stage of a resonator an incoming acoustic wave. The method further includes resonating the incoming wave with a flexible membrane, a taper of the flexible membrane, and a cavity of a first stage, thereby producing synergistic effect on a resulting acoustic resonance. Additionally, the method includes transforming an acoustic energy associated with the incoming acoustic wave into an elastic energy, wherein the elastic energy is channeled through the flexible membrane, thereby reducing an intensity of the incoming acoustic wave and resulting in a first reduced incoming acoustic wave. Further the method includes transferring the first reduced incoming acoustic wave through a hole of a neck of the flexible membrane. The method also includes transferring a first pressure wave caused by a perturbation in the flexible membrane into a second stage, thereby producing a second acoustic wave.

Bandlimiting anti-noise in personal audio devices having adaptive noise cancellation (ANC)
A personal audio device, such as a wireless telephone, includes noise canceling that adaptively generates an anti-noise signal from a reference microphone signal and injects the anti-noise signal into the speaker or other transducer output to cause cancellation of ambient audio sounds. An error microphone is provided proximate the speaker to measure the output of the transducer in order to control the adaptation of the anti-noise signal and to estimate an electro-acoustical path from the noise canceling circuit through the transducer. The anti-noise signal is adaptively generated to minimize the ambient audio sounds at the error microphone. A processing circuit that performs the adaptive noise canceling (ANC) function also filters one or both of the reference and/or error microphone signals, to bias the adaptation of the adaptive filter in one or more frequency regions to alter a degree of the minimization of the ambient audio sounds at the error microphone.
HYBRID ACTIVE NOISE CONTROL SYSTEM
An apparatus for canceling noise at an ear speaker includes a wideband active noise cancellation filter having a first bandwidth and configured to generate a wideband anti-noise signal from a received reference noise signal, a narrowband active noise cancellation filter having a second bandwidth smaller than the first bandwidth and configured to generate a narrowband anti-noise signal from an error noise signal, a filter between the ear speaker and an error microphone and configured to generate a feedback noise signal, and a controller. The controller is configured to eliminate the error noise signal by modifying coefficients of the wideband active noise cancellation filter and the narrowband active noise cancellation filter in response to the wideband anti-noise signal, the narrowband anti-noise signal, and the feedback noise signal.
Road and engine noise control
Exemplary road and engine noise control systems and methods include directly picking up road noise from a structural element of a vehicle to generate a first sense signal representative of the road noise, directly picking up engine noise from an engine of the vehicle to generate a second sense signal representative of the engine noise, and combining the first sense signal and the second sense signal to provide a combination signal representing the combination of the first sense signal and the second sense signal. The systems and methods further include broadband active noise control filtering to generate a filtered combination signal from the combination signal, converting the filtered combination signal provided by the active noise control filtering into anti-noise and radiating the anti-noise to a listening position in an interior of the vehicle. The filtered combination signal is configured so that the anti-noise reduces the noise at the listening position.
