The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive having a regenerative braking system. The tape drive comprises a first reel; a first spindle coupled to the first reel; a first motor coupled to the first spindle, wherein the first motor is configured to rotate the first spindle; a second reel; a second spindle coupled to the second reel; a second motor coupled to the second spindle, wherein the second motor is configured to rotate the second spindle; and a regenerative braking circuit coupled to the first motor and the second motor, wherein during a braking of the motors, the regenerative braking circuit and the motors convert a mechanical energy of the motors to electrical energy for a power storage mechanism, thereby providing resistance to the rotation of the spindles.

Adaptive tension position changing for magnetic tape recording device

Provided is a method, computer program product, and system for handling seek commands for a tape drive. The method includes receiving a seek command for moving tape in the tape drive to a target position. The method further includes determining whether to move the tape according to a first procedure or a second procedure. The first procedure includes directly moving the tape from the current position to the target position with the tape at the first tension. The second procedure includes moving the tape from the current position to the HWM with the tape at the first tension and moving the tape from the HWM to the target position with the tape at the second tension. The method further includes moving the tape according to the determined first or second procedure.

Power improvement for minimum switching frequency operation

A data storage device or disk drive may include a plurality of regulators, a first voltage rail associated with a first regulator of the plurality of regulators, a second voltage rail associated with a second regulator of the plurality of regulators, wherein a switching frequency of the second regulator is greater than a switching frequency of the first regulator, the first voltage rail is associated with a higher voltage than the second voltage rail, or a combination thereof. The data storage device may include one or more processing devices configured to: determine a minimum switching frequency, identify a start time of a switching cycle for the first regulator, based at least in part on determining the minimum switching frequency; and, at or near the start time of the new switching cycle, couple the first regulator to the second regulator to initiate the switching cycle.

Apparatus and method for controlling transportation of tape medium

An apparatus, computer readable medium device, and method for controlling transportation of a tape medium. A determination is made whether to execute a backhitch operation in response to writing a data set to tape from the buffer. If not, a determination is made whether a transaction size at which data is transferred from the buffer to the tape is less than a buffer size. If so, then a determination is made of a a new speed and whether a current speed is different from the determined new speed. If so, then a backhitch is initiated.
