MAGNETIC TAPE APPLIANCE WITH SELECTABLY ALWAYS-LEADING HEAD ASSEMBLIES
20180012625 · 2018-01-11 ·

A tape appliance includes first and second tape guide components. The tape path includes a first path portion between a tape supply reel and the first guide component, a second path portion between a tape take-up reel and the second guide component, and a joining path portion between the first and second guide components. When tape travel is in the first longitudinal direction, a first tape head module engages the tape along one of the first or second tape path portions, and a second tape head module engages the tape along the joining path portion, such that the first tape head module is the leading module. When the tape travel is in the reverse direction, the first tape head module is positioned to engage the tape along the other of the first or second tape path portions, such that the first tape head module remains the leading module.

Damping lateral tape motion disturbances

A system, according to one embodiment, includes: a module having transducers positioned along a tape bearing surface of the module, and a roller guide. A patterned bar is also positioned relative to the roller guide and module to engage a magnetic tape. Moreover, the patterned bar has a plurality of recessed regions along a tape bearing surface thereof. The patterned bar is also not directly coupled to the module, and both edges of the patterned bar which engage the magnetic tape are skiving edges. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.

A hard disk drive includes a disk having a servo region and data tracks. The servo region has servo data for formatting some of the data tracks for high capacity storage and others of the data tracks for low capacity storage. A head writes user data to the high capacity tracks in response to vibration less than a threshold value, and otherwise writes the user data to the low capacity tracks.

Position error signal testing using outer edge wraps

A tape drive-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: using formatting information which corresponds to a magnetic tape loaded in the tape drive to identify wraps on the magnetic tape. Identifying wraps on the magnetic tape includes: identifying an outermost wrap on the magnetic tape on a first side of the magnetic tape, and identifying an outermost wrap on the magnetic tape on a second side of the magnetic tape. A procedure is also performed for each of the wraps identified using the formatting information. Performing the procedure for a given one of the wraps includes: sending one or more instructions to position a magnetic head of the tape drive over the given wrap, and collecting PES information which corresponds to the given wrap.

A plurality of servo patterns are recorded in a magnetic tape along a longitudinal direction. The servo pattern is at least one linear magnetization region pair. The linear magnetization region pair includes a first linear magnetization region, which is linearly magnetized, and a second linear magnetization region, which is linearly magnetized. The first linear magnetization region and the second linear magnetization region are inclined in opposite directions with respect to a first imaginary straight line along a width direction of the magnetic tape. The first linear magnetization region has a steeper inclined angle with respect to the first imaginary straight line than the second linear magnetization region.
