MAGNETIC TAPE DEVICE AND METHOD OF OPERATING MAGNETIC TAPE DEVICE
Provided is a magnetic tape device including: a magnetic head having a magnetic element that acts in proximity to a magnetic layer formed on a front surface of a magnetic tape; and a support member which is disposed at a position facing the magnetic head and against which a back surface of the magnetic tape provided on a side opposite to the front surface is pressed, in which the support member has a groove formed along a running direction of the magnetic tape only in a region corresponding to a non-acting region except for a region of the magnetic layer on which the magnetic element acts.
MAGNETIC TAPE DEVICE AND METHOD OF OPERATING MAGNETIC TAPE DEVICE
Provided is a magnetic tape device including: a magnetic head having a magnetic element that acts on a magnetic layer formed on a front surface of a magnetic tape; and a position adjusting actuator that adjusts a position of the magnetic element in a normal direction of the front surface by moving the magnetic head; and a processor that controls an operation of the position adjusting actuator.
Segmented magnetic recording write head for writing timing-based servo patterns
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a first module having a plurality of first write transducers, and a plurality of second modules each having a second write transducer. Planes of deposition of write gaps of the second write transducers are oriented at an angle of greater than 4 degrees relative to planes of deposition of write gaps of the first write transducers. An apparatus according to another embodiment includes a plurality of first modules each having a first write transducer, and a plurality of second modules each having a second write transducer. Planes of deposition of write gaps of the second write transducers are oriented at an angle of greater than 4 degrees relative to planes of deposition of write gaps of the first write transducers.
Tape head having sensors proximate to an edge
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge. A sensor is located in a thin film region of the module. The sensor has a free layer. A distance from the first edge to the free layer is less than a distance from the second edge to the free layer. A method according to another embodiment includes detecting a distance between a free layer of a sensor and an edge closest thereto. The free layer is positioned between an upper shield and the edge. A wrap angle is selected based on the detected distance for inducing tenting of a magnetic recording tape in a region above the free layer when the magnetic recording tape moves over the module.

ACTIVE SPACING CONTROL FOR CONTACTLESS TAPE RECORDING
The present invention relates to the field of tape drives, tape transport, tape heads and tape head suspension. More particularly, the present invention is related to magnetic tape data storage and tape recorders that include components designed to minimize or eliminate head-to-tape contact to reduce or eliminate wear and contamination of tape drive heads. Methods and apparatus of the present invention may dynamically control the head-to-media spacing by moving locations of magnetic heads relative to a tape. Such apparatus may include components designed to minimize magnetic spacing. This may be accomplished using actuators that move the magnetic heads, that move the tape, or that move both the magnetic heads and the tape. This may include supporting a back surface of the tape. Alternatively, or additionally, the movement of the tape past the magnetic heads may be performed using mechanisms that contact and drive the back surface of the tape.

Tape support system with a load-unload mechanism
The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic recording device having a magnetic recording media guide support system with a load-unload mechanism. The magnetic recording media guide is positioned between the magnetic head assembly and at least one guide roller, and moves a magnetic recording media surface closer to and further from the magnetic head assembly. The magnetic recording media guide is movable in a direction perpendicular to a direction that the magnetic recording media moves past the magnetic head assembly. The magnetic recording media guide is stationary in relation to the magnetic recording media when the magnetic recording media moves past the magnetic head assembly while a magnetic head is positioned to read data from or write data to the magnetic recording media. Additionally, the magnetic recording media guide can planarize the magnetic recording media surface on the magnetic head.
