Mechanized take-up reel and method for loading and unloading a tape storage medium
Various embodiments relate to apparatuses and methods for loading and unloading a tape storage medium. In one embodiment, an apparatus for such purpose includes a mechanized take-up reel. The mechanized take-up reel includes an inner hub, an outer hub being selectively nonrotatably coupleable with the inner hub (where at least one of the hubs is coupled to a rotating mechanism), a tongue coupled to the inner hub, and a slot in the outer hub for permitting the tongue to extend beyond a periphery of a tape engaging surface of the outer hub upon relative rotation between the inner and outer hubs.
Recovery device, recovery system, and recovery method
In order to improve the probability of recovering tape remaining in a tape device without disassembling the tape device, this recovery device comprises: a connection unit that attaches one lengthwise end of a designated recovery tape member to near one lengthwise end, which is a free end, of a tape member having the other end bound to a designated binding member; a recovery unit to which the other end of the recovery tape member is fixed and that winds the recovery tape member and the attached tape member; and a release unit that separates the tape member from the binding member at the other end or near the other end after attachment.
RECOVERY DEVICE, RECOVERY SYSTEM, AND RECOVERY METHOD

Optimized tape unmount operation
A method for indexing a tape for unmounting from a tape drive is discussed. The method can determine that an update has been made to the tape since it was last mounted. The method can identify a tape head position with respect to the tape, the tape including a data partition and an index partition. The method can identify first position and a second position on the tape. The method can determine first distance, a length of tape between first position and tape head position. The method can determine second distance, a length of tape between first position and second position. The method can determine that first distance is less than second distance. The method can reposition the tape to a primary section and write the metadata index. The method can reposition tape to the second position write a data index beginning at the second position of the data partition.
Spring clip leader and housing for magnetic tape
A system, according to one embodiment, includes: a plurality of tape reels; and a tape drive configured for reading data from tape stored on at least one of the plurality of tape reels. At least some of the tape reels have a tape wound thereon and a spring-like clip coupled to a free end of the tape. Moreover, the clip is selectively positionable in a wrapped position where the clip wraps around a portion of the tape when the tape is wound onto the reel, thereby holding the portion of the tape in place on the reel.
Mechanized take-up reel and method for loading and unloading a tape storage medium
Various embodiments relate to methods for loading and unloading a tape storage medium. According to one embodiment, a method for loading a tape storage medium includes positioning a mechanized take-up reel with respect to a tape supply reel, positioning a feature coupled to a tape storage medium on the tape supply reel with respect to the mechanized take-up reel, rotatably decoupling an inner hub of the mechanized take-up reel from an outer hub of the mechanized take-up reel, extending a tongue of the mechanized take-up reel, engaging the tongue with the feature, retracting the tongue and feature into the outer hub, and nonrotably coupling the inner hub with the outer hub.
Spring clip leader and housing for magnetic tape
A spring-like clip for a spool of tape, one end of the clip being attached to one end of the tape, and another end of the clip having an engagement feature that allows the clip to be pulled from the spool. The clip is configured to curve around the spool to hold the tape in place. In one general embodiment, a product includes a reel, a tape coupled to the reel, and a spring-like clip coupled to a free end of the tape. The clip is selectively positionable in a wrapped position where the clip wraps around a portion of the tape when the tape is wound onto the reel, thereby holding the portion of the tape in place on the reel. Systems for using various types of such products are presented, and generally include a tape drive configured for reading data from tape stored on such products.
Permanent magnetic chucking device with large force differential
An apparatus usable as a chucking device to temporarily couple two mechanical objects together. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes an arbor configured to receive an at least partially ferromagnetic object; and a magnet assembly. The magnet assembly includes multiple permanent magnets mounted in a soft ferromagnetic enclosure. The magnet assembly is rotatably coupled to the arbor such that the magnet assembly and the arbor are positionable relative to one another in locking and unlocking positions upon relative rotation therebetween. The magnet assembly is configured to exert a pulling force on the object in the locking position and a lesser force in the unlocking position.
