Write reordering in a hybrid disk drive

A hybrid drive and associated methods increase the rate at which data are transferred to a nonvolatile storage medium in the hybrid drive. By using a large nonvolatile solid state memory device as cache memory for a magnetic disk drive, a very large number of write commands can be cached and subsequently reordered and executed in an efficient manner. In addition, strategic selection and reordering of only a portion of the write commands stored in the nonvolatile solid state memory device increases efficiency of the reordering process.

DVD player with external connection for increased functionality

The present invention pertains to an optical disc player with a standard digital port, such as a USB port, coupled to an external storage, such as a thumb drive, coupled to a standard digital port such as a USB port. The external storage may also be used to provide content, commands or applications that enable the player to present certain additional content, or to perform certain additional or enhanced functions.

Video replay systems and methods

A video replay system which allows for the playback of video files from a buffer in random access memory and from disk to minimize the delay between capturing and replaying a desired video portion. In one embodiment, a portion of RAM is allocated to provide a buffer for holding video files in memory before the files are written to a hard drive or other non-volatile storage. An index of key frames is also stored in the buffer. The computer system executes software that is responsive to an operator's commands to read the video files and index and playback desired video portions in a variety of modes and speeds, including slow motion, reverse, fast-forward, and slow or fast reverse.

Optical cold storage with encoding and placement of data chunks on different optical disks

Various embodiments (systems) are described for transferring data from a primary storage (e.g., magnetic disk drives, solid state drives, etc.) to an optical cold storage rack. The optical cold storage rack may include many physical optical storage disks, but a much smaller number of burners and readers (e.g., optical disk drives). When data is to be transferred to the optical cold storage rack, the system may generate a plan for performing the transfer. Migration worker components may then implement the plan and may be exclusively dedicated to implementing such plans. In various embodiments, the plan may specify how large data file aggregates (collections of portions of one or more data files) are to be distributed across optical disks (disks) to improve throughput during subsequent reading operations from the optical cold storage rack. The plan may also anticipate the relation between the limited number of burners/readers and the overall optical cold storage rack disk capacity.
