Magnetic disk device and head change processing method
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a first disk, the second disk, and a first head which writes and reads to the first disk, a second head which writes and reads to the second disk, and a controller which calculates an estimated position at which the second head is estimated to be disposed on the second disk based on first relative position information related to a relative position in a radial direction between the first head and the second head when the first head is switched to the second head.
Tape drive configured to enable magnetic media to fly above an upstream or a downstream head assembly
The present disclosure generally relates to a tape head and a tape drive including a tape head. The tape head comprises a first same gap verify (SGV) head assembly comprising a first media facing surface (MFS) and a plurality of first write transducer and first read transducer pairs, and a second SGV head assembly comprising a second MFS and a plurality of second write transducer and second read transducer pairs. During operation, when a tape or magnetic media moves in a first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the second MFS and is spaced from the first MFS, and when the tape moves in a second direction opposite the first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the first MFS and is spaced from the second MFS. As such, the tape contacts only one edge of either the first or second MFS during operation.
Hard disk drive having dual micro-actuators on carriage arms
According to one embodiment, there is provided a hard disk drive including a first recording surface, a second recording surface, a first magnetic head, a first actuator and a second actuator that move the first magnetic head, a second magnetic head, a third actuator and a fourth actuator that move the second magnetic head, a fifth actuator that moves the second actuator and the fourth actuator, a drive circuit that implements at least one of a first mode in which the second actuator and the fourth actuator operate differently from each other or a second mode in which the first and third actuators operate differently from each other, and a controller that controls the drive circuit.
Magnetic tape having characterized magnetic layer, magnetic tape cartridge, and magnetic tape apparatus
The magnetic tape in which a difference (S.sub.0.1−S.sub.1.6) between a spacing S.sub.0.1 and a spacing S.sub.1.6 obtained after n-hexane cleaning on a surface of the magnetic layer is equal to or less than 32 nm. The S.sub.0.1 is a value obtained as a spacing under a pressing force of 0.1 atm from a relational expression between a pressure and a spacing obtained by performing a spacing measurement on the surface of the magnetic layer by an optical interference method under a pressing force of each of a plurality of different pressures after the n-hexane cleaning, and S.sub.1.6 is a spacing measured on the surface of the magnetic layer by the optical interference method under the pressing force of 1.6 atm after the n-hexane cleaning.
Magnetic disk device
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a plurality of magnetic disks, a plurality of magnetic heads provided correspondingly to the plurality of magnetic disks and configured to carry out read/write of data from/to the magnetic disks, and a control section configured to control read/write of the magnetic heads. Each of the plurality of magnetic disks includes a first storage section storing therein control information concerning read/write of the magnetic head. The control section switches the first storage section which is a storage destination of first information that is at least a part of the control information from the magnetic disk to another magnetic disk.
Tape head having sensors proximate to an edge
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge. A sensor is located in a thin film region of the module. The sensor has a free layer. A distance from the first edge to the free layer is less than a distance from the second edge to the free layer. A method according to another embodiment includes detecting a distance between a free layer of a sensor and an edge closest thereto. The free layer is positioned between an upper shield and the edge. A wrap angle is selected based on the detected distance for inducing tenting of a magnetic recording tape in a region above the free layer when the magnetic recording tape moves over the module.
Lumped-parameter thermal model of a write transducer for clearance control on magnetic recording device
A lumped-parameter function δ is determined that represents an average power dissipated by a write transducer when writing a signal to a magnetic recording medium. Temperatures of the write transducer are measured while varying the parameters to determine constants of the function δ. The function δ is used to adjust power applied to a clearance control heater when writing to the magnetic recording medium.
Health monitoring for head of a heat-assisted magnetic recording device using a writer-reader offset
A method includes moving a heat-assisted magnetic recording head relative to a magnetic recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks, the head comprising a reader and a writer including a near-field transducer (NFT) optically coupled to a laser diode, the writer comprising a center which is laterally offset relative to a center of the reader to define a writer-reader offset (WRO) therebetween. Patterns are written to a particular track at a plurality of laser diode current levels. The patterns are read and a WRO value is calculated at a peak amplitude position for each of the laser diode current levels. A slope of the WRO values is determined with the laser current diode levels. A health condition of the NFT is determined by determining if the slope is greater than a predetermined threshold indicative of non-uniform activation across the NFT.
Skew compensation in a patterned medium
A system may compensate for skew in a patterned medium, such as but not limited to a self-assembling bit patterned medium, with a write pole separated from a data storage medium by an air bearing. The write pole being connected to a controller. The data storage medium can have a plurality of magnetic islands arranged in data tracks with each data track having a track center. The write pole may be selectively shifted from the track center by the controller to compensate for a skewed write pole configuration.
