Radiation-shielding material

A radiation shielding material that is lighter and has lower installation restrictions than conventional methods, and that exhibits excellent shielding efficiency against radiation in the high energy region. The radiation shielding material comprises a complex containing a fibrous nanocarbon material, a primary radiation shielding particle, and a binder, wherein the fibrous nanocarbon material and the primary radiation shielding particle are dispersed in the binder.

An elongated twisted X-ray shield can be deployed within a pump-out channel of an electron microscope or similar equipment. The shield can incorporate lead within a stainless steel shell, with optional low-Z cladding outside the shell. Further variations are disclosed.

[Solving Means] A radiation shielding material includes: a resin composition containing a proportion of 20 to 80 vol % of fluoride powder containing barium as a constituent element. The fluoride powder is favorably barium fluoride or lithium barium fluoride, the resin favorably has a refractive index (n) of 1.4 to 1.6, and particularly, a difference between a refractive index of the resin and a refractive index of the fluoride powder is favorably within ±0.05.

Transparent neutron shielding material

Provided is a neutron shielding material having excellent transparency and high neutron shielding ability. In this neutron shielding material, light transmittance at wave length of 400 to 700 nm is 80% or greater, and the thickness of a 1/10 value layer of a neutron generated from Californium 252 is 14 cm or less.

A radiation shielding material is fabricated by providing a mixture of a polyester polymer and lead oxide. The material can be formed by the open mold cast technique. A nanocomposite material comprising at least 10% lead oxide is used to provide shielding for diagnostic or medium x-rays. A formulation comprising 40% of lead oxide nanofiller embedded in a polyester matrix performed best at attenuation of diagnostic and medium x-ray levels.
