RADIATION SHIELDED ENCLOSURE FOR SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL CASK
20230103480 · 2023-04-06 · ·

A containment enclosure for shielding an outer cask containing an inner canister loaded with nuclear waste such as spent fuel rods. The enclosure includes a lower base portion at least partially embedded in a concrete pad and an upper radiation shielding portion defined by a shield jacket coupled to and supported by the lower base portion at a circumferential joint. Cavities of the base and shielding portions collectively define a contiguous containment space for the cask. A portion of the cask resides in each of the base and shielding portions which completely enclose and shield the cask to minimize radiation dosage of personnel in the environment surrounding the cask. The cask is cooled by a natural convectively-driven ambient cooling air ventilation system including air inlets at the circumferential joint of the enclosure. The concrete pad may be part of a spent nuclear fuel storage installation comprising plural cask containment enclosures.

Method of making atomic number (Z) grade small sat radiation shielding vault

A radiation shielded vault structure includes a rigid outer structure comprising a plurality of rigid structural components that are interconnected at elongated joints to define an interior space. The structural components include a layer of lower atomic number (Z) material such as aluminum alloy and one or more layers of higher atomic number (Z) material titanium and/or tantalum. The vault structure may include radiation shield members extending along the elongated joints to provide radiation shielding at the elongated joints. The shield members comprise a higher atomic number (Z) material such as titanium or tantalum. The rigid structural components may comprise plate members that are interconnected along side edges thereof. End plates may be attached to the plate members to close off the interior space.

Radiation protection apparatus and materials therefor

The present invention relates to rigid structures and composite materials thereof for providing radiation attenuation/shielding. Some embodiments pertain to a radiation shielding apparatus including: a plurality of positionable radiation-shielding stacks of tiles. The stacks are subsequently and adjacently arranged in a contiguous configuration. A tile positioning mechanism allows movement of tiles within a stack between a stacked (retracted) position and an extended position. In the extended position, the tiles of each of the plurality of radiation shielding stacks at least partially overlap tiles of subsequent and adjacent tile stack at corresponding opposing side-margins thereof.

Ventilated metal storage overpack (VMSO)

A storage apparatus is provided for dry storage of radioactive nuclear waste. The storage apparatus comprises a sealed canister containing the radioactive nuclear waste and an outer ventilated metal storage overpack (VMSO). The VMSO has a plurality of vents to enable ambient air flow through the VMSO and around the canister to thereby dissipate heat from the canister. The VMSO has a side wall having an inner metal layer and one or more sets of alternating layers. Each set includes a neutron absorbing layer adjacent to another metal layer so that neutron absorbing and metal layers alternate throughout the side wall. The neutron absorbing layer or layers are designed to absorb neutron particles radiated from the radioactive nuclear waste and the metal layers are designed to absorb gamma particles radiated from the radioactive nuclear waste as well as radiated from the neutron absorbing layer or layers that result from reactions associated with absorption of neutron particles.

Scatter Radiation Protection Device

A scatter radiation protection device is provided. The scatter radiation protection device includes a barrier that is movable in an x-direction, a y-direction, and a z direction; a skirt that is movable in an x-direction; and a sliding track having an upper surface and a lower surface. The barrier and the skirt are configured for connection to the sliding track, and the barrier and the skirt provide for at least 0.5 millimeters of lead (mmPb) equivalence.

Linked antenna pair for transmission through shielded shipping container

The present disclosure provides a linked antenna pair for a shipping container having a thermally insulated and electromagnetically shielded cavity for holding a payload. The linked antenna pair comprises a first antenna disposed inside the cavity, a second antenna disposed outside the cavity, and a feed line that electrically connects the first antenna to the second antenna.

RADIATION SHIELDING SYSTEM

A radiation shielding system for an x-ray digital detector array includes a first radiation shield having a plurality of shielding pads and a plurality of interstices between the plurality of shielding pads, the plurality of shielding pads having a greater thickness than the thickness of the plurality of interstices. The plurality of shielding pads is configured to be positioned over active components of the x-ray digital detector array and the interstices are configured to be positioned over passive components of the x-ray digital detector array.

ANTI-MULTIPACTOR DEVICE
