The deflection mechanism comprises a first deflector located downstream the electron beam source and a second deflector located downstream the first deflector. The objective lens assembly comprises: an excitation coil; and a magnetic yoke, formed by a magnetizer material as a housing which opens towards the sample and comprising a hollow body defining an internal chamber where the excitation coil is accommodated, and at least one inclined portion extending inward from the hollow body at an angle with reference to the hollow body and directing towards the optical axis, with an end of the at least one inclined portion being formed into a pole piece. The deflection mechanism further comprises a third deflector located between the second deflector and the objective lens assembly and disposed in an opening delimited and circumscribed by the pole piece, and each of the first deflector, the second deflector and the third deflector is an electrostatic deflector.

There is provided a scanning electron microscope which has a sample chamber capable of being evacuated to a low vacuum. The scanning electron microscope includes an electron gun for emitting an electron beam, an objective lens for focusing the emitted beam onto a sample, and a sample chamber in which the sample is housed. The objective lens includes an inner polepiece, an outer polepiece disposed outside the inner polepiece and facing the sample chamber, at least one through-hole extending through the inner and outer polepieces, and at least one cover member that closes off the through-hole. An opening is formed between the inner polepiece and the outer polepiece. The objective lens causes leakage of magnetic field from the opening toward the sample. The sample chamber has a degree of vacuum lower than that in an inner space that forms an electron beam path inside the inner polepiece.

Objective lens arrangement usable in particle-optical systems

An objective lens arrangement includes a first, second and third pole pieces, each being substantially rotationally symmetric. The first, second and third pole pieces are disposed on a same side of an object plane. An end of the first pole piece is separated from an end of the second pole piece to form a first gap, and an end of the third pole piece is separated from an end of the second pole piece to form a second gap. A first excitation coil generates a focusing magnetic field in the first gap, and a second excitation coil generates a compensating magnetic field in the second gap. First and second power supplies supply current to the first and second excitation coils, respectively. A magnetic flux generated in the second pole piece is oriented in a same direction as a magnetic flux generated in the second pole piece.

Device and method for optimizing diffusion section of electron beam

Provided is a device for optimizing a diffusion section of an electron beam, comprising two groups of permanent magnets, a magnetic field formed by the four magnetic poles extending the electron beam in a longitudinal direction, and compressing the electron beam in a transverse direction, so that the electron beam becomes an approximate ellipse; another magnetic field formed by the eight magnetic poles optimizing an edge of a dispersed electron-beam bunch into an approximate rectangle; by controlling the four longitudinal connection mechanisms so that the upper magnetic yoke and the lower magnetic yoke of the first group of permanent magnets move synchronously towards the center thereof thereby longitudinally compressing the electron beam in the shape of an approximate ellipse, and the upper magnetic yoke and the lower magnetic yoke of the second group of permanent magnets move synchronously towards the center thereof thereby longitudinally compressing the electron beam in the shape of an approximate rectangle, and the process of longitudinal compression is repeated until a longitudinal size of the electron-beam bunch is reduced to 80 mm. The invention is capable of reasonably compressing a longitudinal size of an electron-beam bunch after diffusion to approximately 80 mm, which ensures optimum irradiation uniformity and efficiency, and enables the longitudinal size to be within the range of a conventional titanium window.
