Visual detection of mercury ions
Composite materials comprising a mesoflower structure, methods of preparing the composite material, and methods of detecting heavy metal ion using the composite material are described herein. In some embodiments, a silica-coated gold mesoflower with a layer of silver quantum clusters may be capable of detecting Hg.sup.2+ ions in a sample at zeptomolar concentrations.
Gaseous tritium light source
A gaseous tritium light source (GTLS), which has a hermetically sealed outer sleeve made of glass, more particularly borosilicate glass. A high durability and lighting intensity is produced due to the fact that at least some sections of the outer sleeve have an outer coating applied directly to the outer surface of the outer sleeve serving as a reflective layer made of a metal, wherein the outer coating has an epitaxial structure and wherein the metal has a reflectance of >70% for visible light.
Illuminating object
An autonomous, permanently illuminating object includes a sheath that defines an interior space in which is disposed a glass capsule containing a gaseous tritium light source. The sheath defines a transparent region. A layer of photoluminescent pigments is disposed between the glass capsule and the transparent region of the sheath.

Structured light active localization microscopy
Methods and systems are provided for estimating locations of sub-wavelength-sized emitters, which may be sparsely arrayed among inactive emitters, in one or more dimensions to synthesize a super-resolved image. The emitter emits light in response to structured illumination, which may be acousto-optically generated. The structured illumination is translated, and a detector, such as a camera pixel, senses the emitted linear or nonlinear response, producing a periodic signal. A processor computes a phase of the signal using phase shifting interferometry and uses it to estimate the emitter location with resolution finer than a quarter of the illumination wavelength. Modulation depth and/or amplitude of the signal may be used to estimate emitter size and/or evaluate location fidelity. Optical sectioning or extended depth of field may be provided by controlling spatial coherence of the illumination. Encoding and decoding emitter locations with non-periodic patterns is also described.
Optode sensor with integrated reference
A system for obtaining a measurement of a species of interest. The system includes one or more reference regions, a sensor region, an exciter unit, a detector unit and a processing unit. The exciter unit exposes first and second chemical transducers in the reference and sensor regions, respectively, to an excitation light while they are exposed to reference environments and an analyte, respectively. The detector unit measures responses of the first and the second chemical transducers to the excitation light. The processing unit determines a compensation for aging of the first chemical transducer from a discrepancy between the measurements of the responses of the first chemical transducer and reference responses. The processing unit applies the compensation for aging to the measurement of the response of the second chemical transducer to obtain the measurement of the species of interest in the analyte.
Apparatus and method for encapsulating tritium
A module comprising: one or more vials containing tritium; one or more tritium covers; and an open space within the one or more tritium covers, wherein the one or more vials containing tritium are located within the open space of the one or more tritium covers so that the one or more tritium covers protect the one or more vials containing tritium, and wherein the one or more tritium covers are made from a material that exhibits sufficient strength so that the module protects the one or more vials containing tritium from damage when dropped from a distance of 1 m or more.
