A battery rack effectively prevents the spread of a fire or heat to adjacent battery packs when the fire or thermal runaway occurs in any of a plurality of battery packs. To achieve the above-described object, the battery rack includes a plurality of battery packs; and a rack case having a receiving space with an open structure in which the plurality of battery packs is vertically mounted at intervals and placed in vertical communication with one another, wherein a stopper is provided in the receiving space and disposed between the plurality of battery packs, spaced apart from the plurality of battery packs, and is configured to suppress volume expansion of the battery pack when the volume of the battery pack expands.

An atmosphere of the volume of space comprises gas having a thermal conductivity less than 0.018 watts per meter per degree Celsius. This atmosphere of gas provides an insulative layer between the outer wall of the enclosure and the batteries. With this insulative layer, the battery pack assembly can be subjected to autoclaving without damaging the batteries. The battery pack assembly can be used to power surgical tools or other devices that are subjected to autoclaving.

Aerogel-based components and systems for electric vehicle thermal management are provided. Exemplary embodiments include a heat control member. The heat control member can include reinforced aerogel compositions that are durable and easy to handle, have favorable performance for use as heat control members and thermal barriers for batteries, have favorable insulation properties, and have favorable reaction to fire, combustion and flame-resistance properties. Also provided are methods of preparing or manufacturing such reinforced aerogel compositions. In certain embodiments, the composition has a silica-based aerogel framework reinforced with a fiber and including one or more opacifying additives.
