FUEL CELL HAVING A COMPLIANT ENERGY ATTENUATING BUMPER
A fuel cell system includes a plurality of stacked bipolar plate assemblies. Each of the plurality of stacked bipolar plate assemblies includes a first subgasket including a first peripheral edge. The first subgasket supports a first membrane electrode assembly (MEA). A second subgasket including a second peripheral edge supports a second MEA. A bipolar plate is disposed between the first subgasket and the second subgasket. The bipolar plate has a first side defining a first plurality of passages receptive of a cathode fluid, a second side defining a second plurality of passages receptive of an anode fluid, and a plurality of coolant passages defined between the first subgasket and the second subgasket. A seal bead extends around the bipolar plate. The seal bead seals against the first subgasket and the second subgasket. A compliant energy attenuating bumper extends about the bipolar plate spaced from the seal bead.

A fuel cell system includes a plurality of stacked bipolar plate assemblies. Each of the plurality of stacked bipolar plate assemblies includes a first subgasket including a first peripheral edge. The first subgasket supports a first membrane electrode assembly (MEA). A second subgasket including a second peripheral edge supports a second MEA. A bipolar plate is disposed between the first subgasket and the second subgasket. The bipolar plate has a first side defining a first plurality of passages receptive of a cathode fluid, a second side defining a second plurality of passages receptive of an anode fluid, and a plurality of coolant passages defined between the first subgasket and the second subgasket. A seal bead extends around the bipolar plate. The seal bead seals against the first subgasket and the second subgasket. A compliant energy attenuating bumper extends about the bipolar plate spaced from the seal bead.
Regenerative solid oxide stack
An individual solid oxide cell (SOC) constructed of a sandwich configuration including in the following order: an oxygen electrode, a solid oxide electrolyte, a fuel electrode, a fuel manifold, and at least one layer of mesh. In one embodiment, the mesh supports a reforming catalyst resulting in a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) having a reformer embedded therein. The reformer-modified SOFC functions internally to steam reform or partially oxidize a gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, to a gaseous reformate of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which is converted in the SOC to water, carbon dioxide, or a mixture thereof, and an electrical current. In another embodiment, an electrical insulator is disposed between the fuel manifold and the mesh resulting in a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), which functions to electrolyze water and/or carbon dioxide.
Regenerative solid oxide stack

FUEL CELL SEPARATOR
A separator for a fuel cell includes protrusions spaced apart from each other. The protrusions are configured to contact a power generation portion. The separator includes a gas passage that extends between two adjacent ones of the protrusions. The gas passage includes ribs that protrude toward the power generation portion. The ribs include first ribs spaced apart from each other in an arrangement direction of the protrusions and a second rib located between adjacent ones of the first ribs in the arrangement direction. A downstream end of each of the first ribs includes a separated portion separated from the power generation portion. An upstream end of the second rib includes an inclined portion inclined so as to become closer to the power generation portion toward a downstream side. At least part of the inclined portion is located downstream of at least part of the separated portion.
Electrode assembly and flow battery with improved electrolyte distribution
An electrode assembly for a flow battery is disclosed comprising a porous electrode material, a frame surrounding the porous electrode material, at least a distributor tube embedded in the porous electrode material having an inlet for supplying electrolyte to the porous electrode material and at least another distributor tube embedded in the porous electrode material having an outlet for discharging electrolyte out of the porous material. The walls of the distributor tubes are preferably provided with holes or pores for allowing a uniform distribution of the electrolyte within the electrode material. The distributor tubes provide the required electrolyte flow path length within the electrode material to minimize shunt current flowing between the flow cells in the battery stack.
Electrode assembly and flow battery with improved electrolyte distribution
An electrode assembly for a flow battery is disclosed comprising a porous electrode material, a frame surrounding the porous electrode material, at least a distributor tube embedded in the porous electrode material having an inlet for supplying electrolyte to the porous electrode material and at least another distributor tube embedded in the porous electrode material having an outlet for discharging electrolyte out of the porous material. The distributor tubes provide the required electrolyte flow path length within the electrode material to minimize shunt current flowing between the flow cells in the battery stack.
Molding process for making fuel cell components
An illustrative method of making a fuel cell component includes obtaining at least one blank plate including graphite and a polymer; establishing a temperature of the blank that is sufficient to maintain the polymer in an at least partially molten state; and applying a compression molding force to the blank until the polymer is essentially solidified to form a plate including a plurality of channels on at least one side of the plate. The blank plate has a central area having a first thickness. The blank plate also has two generally parallel edges on opposite sides of the central area. The edges have a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness.
Molding process for making fuel cell components
An illustrative method of making a fuel cell component includes obtaining at least one blank plate including graphite and a polymer; establishing a temperature of the blank that is sufficient to maintain the polymer in an at least partially molten state; and applying a compression molding force to the blank until the polymer is essentially solidified to form a plate including a plurality of channels on at least one side of the plate. The blank plate has a central area having a first thickness. The blank plate also has two generally parallel edges on opposite sides of the central area. The edges have a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness.
Fuel cell metal separator and power generation cell
A first metal separator includes a seal bead protruding from a base plate. The seal bead includes a curved section having a curved shape in a plan view of the first metal separator. The combination of the radius of curvature and the angle of the curved section is set within a specific zone where variation in a seal surface pressure in a direction in which the seal bead extends is suppressed.
