A branchline coupler is communicatively coupled to the first channel and the second channel. The branchline coupler comprises one or more quarter wave transformers and a set of PIN diode switches configured to have a high impedance responsive to the transmitter being in an amplitude-based mode and a low impedance responsive to the transmitter being in a phase-based mode.

A system of antennas, each having disparity operating frequencies, are incorporated into the same aircraft body panels. HF antennas define loops with large internal areas; additional higher frequency antennas are disposed within that large internal area. The higher frequency antennas are sufficiently different so as to prevent coupling. Antennas operating in the same frequency range, disposed on different parallel surfaces are operated in concert as a steerable array.

A method and apparatus for communicating RF signals is described. In one embodiment, the apparatus is evidenced by a multi-band integrated antenna assembly comprising a blade antenna having a conductive ground plane, a planar antenna array for communicating a second signal, and a signal processor. The planar antenna array transmits and receives signals using a passive Rotman lens beam former that can be utilized in environmentally challenging applications.

The structural element is designed and detachably fastened by a frame thereof to the outer skin in the corresponding skin panel on the side of the outer skin opposite the outer surface, such that it seals the corresponding opening such that the skin panel has at least the same pressure-tightness and at least the same strength relative to tension, pressure and shear forces which act in the skin panel in the extension direction of the outer skin as the same skin panel without the corresponding opening.

The described features include a scalable waveguide architecture for a waveguide device. The waveguide device may be split into one or more waveguide blocks instead of manufacturing increasingly larger single-piece waveguide devices. Described techniques provide for a radio-frequency (RF) seal between such waveguide blocks that may facilitate greater manufacturing tolerances while maintaining an effective RF seal at the junction of the waveguide blocks. The described techniques include channels within one or more waveguide blocks opening to the dielectric gap between the waveguide blocks. The channels may, for each of multiple waveguides joined at the interface between waveguide blocks, be included in one or both waveguide blocks and may be in a single waveguide dimension relative to the multiple waveguides, or extend for more than one waveguide dimensions.
