COMMUNICATION DEVICE COMPRISING A RETROREFLECTIVE STRUCTURE

The disclosure relates to suppressing surface waves in a communication device for a wireless communication system. The communication device includes a dielectric layer extending along a plane between a chassis and a glass layer, an antenna element configured to emit a radio wave, and a retroreflective structure extending inside the dielectric layer and being located adjacent to the antenna element, and where the retroreflective structure is configured to reflect the radio wave in an angle non-parallel to the plane. The retroreflective structure hence prevents parasitic channeling of the antenna energy into surface waves in and behind the glass layer and directs the radiation into the desired direction.

System for sensing backscatter tag communications from retrodirective antenna arrays

A system for using thin and energy-autonomous backscatter tags and corresponding sensing nodes may operate with 24 GHz backscatter reflectarray tags having low power consumption. A digital beam steering, frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar may be used for detection, localization, identification and communications. The tags may include environmental sensors that are used to modulate backscatter waves for data communications directed to a reader or may digitally modulate the backscatter transmissions without sensor data for independent localization of each tag in a network.

Phase-conjugate configuration of high-gain, dual-polarized sector antennas for a repeater

An antenna system having a transmit assembly with a first set of antenna elements for transmitting signals. Each antenna element in this first set may be disposed from a respective adjacent antenna element by a predetermined azimuthal increment and by a predetermined altitudinal increment. The antenna system further includes a receive assembly having a second set of antenna elements for receiving signals. Each antenna element in this second set may be disposed from a respective adjacent antenna element by a predetermined azimuthal increment and by a predetermined altitudinal increment. The predetermined azimuthal and altitudinal increments of the first set may be substantially similar to the predetermined azimuthal and altitudinal increments, respectively, of the second set.

Smart ground-terminal antenna for geostationary satellites in slightly inclined orbits

A receive only smart antenna with a command pointing option for communicating with geostationary satellites that autonomously detects the directions from which desired signal are received, and steer the multiple beams accordingly. An array feed is used to illuminate a parabolic reflector. Each feed element of the receive only smart antenna is associated with a unique beam pointing direction. As a receiver is switched to different feed elements, the far-field beam is scanned, making it possible to track a geostationary satellite in a slightly inclined orbit. This eliminates the need for mechanical tracking and maintains high antenna gain in the direction of the geostationary satellite. The receive only smart antenna also features capabilities to form multiple simultaneous beams supporting operations of multiple geo-satellites in closely spaced slightly inclined orbits. The designs can support orthogonal beams for enhanced bandwidth capacity via multiple beams with excellent spatial isolation.

NEAR-GRAZING RETROREFLECTORS FOR POLARIZATION

A metasurface includes a dielectric material, a ground plane on a back side of the dielectric material; and at least one conductive element on a top surface of the dielectric material, wherein the at least one conductive element includes at least one of a ground-backed dipole or a slot array.

Antenna Apparatus, Antenna System and Method of Operation

An antenna apparatus is provided that has a strip of antenna elements extending in a first dimension, and a signal processing interface for connection to signal processing circuitry. A plurality of beamforming networks are also provided, wherein each beamforming network is arranged, when coupled to the strip of antenna elements, to cause an associated beam pattern of the beamforming network to be generated by the strip of antenna elements. Switching circuitry is used to enable any one of the plurality of beamforming networks to be inserted between the strip of antenna elements and the signal processing interface. Each beamforming network couples a first node of the beamforming network with multiple second nodes of the beamforming network in accordance with a coupling pattern of that beamforming network. As a result, when the switching circuitry causes a given beamforming network to be inserted between the strip of antenna elements and the signal processing interface, the signal processing interface is coupled to the first node, each antenna element is coupled to an associated one of the second nodes, and the coupling pattern of the given beamforming network causes the associated beam pattern to be generated by the strip of antenna elements.

Methodology to combine Wave Mechanics with Retro-Reflection, to take in the Far Field emitted (incident) signal via a small array, process the signal and Retro-Reflectively re-transmits the signal back out, with the Wave Mechanics rotation mechanism injected into the array weights. The novelty is using a captured estimate of the incident steering vector, and using each weight to construct the R matrix for a given desired rotation angle. This R matrix is then used to compute a set of transmit weights, that will produce the rotation angle, with an unknown incident signal angle.
