An electrical safety device is described which includes a socket arranged to receive an electrical plug of an electrical appliance to connect a current supply to the electrical appliance, a thermal sensor arranged to detect the surface temperature of an electrical plug when received in the socket and a processor in communication with the thermal sensor, the processor configured to determine when the sensed surface temperature exceeds a predetermined threshold. The invention also includes an electrical safety system comprising the electrical safety device configured to communicate with a remote device. The device and system provide early detection of electrical faults and hazards to reduce the risk of fires.

A thermal detection system is provided. The thermal detection system includes a thermal detector, an area indicating unit and a control unit. The thermal detector includes a thermal sensor array. The thermal detector is configured to detect thermal radiation within a detection area around the thermal detector. The detection area is defined by a field of view of the thermal sensor array. The area indicating unit is arranged to indicate a human-perceptible area according to the detection area. The human-perceptible area is located within the detection area and indicates a geometric form of the detection area. The control unit, coupled to the thermal detector and the area indicating unit, is configured to generate a thermal detection result according to the detected thermal radiation. The thermal detection system further includes a notification unit for overheat indication, a communication unit for wireless signal transmission, and a protection unit for overheat protection.

The corresponding circuit includes: a counter (16); linking elements between the counter and the thermal protection device such that the counter can indicate the number of operation interruptions caused by the thermal protection device; and elements for resetting the counter.

The temperature sensor monitors a temperature of the electrical connector during current sinking and current sourcing operations. During current sinking, if the temperature sensor senses a predetermined level of overheating of the electrical connector, then the sourcing of current to the electrical apparatus is switched off. During current sourcing, if the temperature sensor senses a predetermined level of overheating of the electrical connector, then the sourcing of current to the sinking device is switched off. Switching off the source of current prevents overheating of the electrical connector and protects the electrical apparatus during current sinking and current sourcing operations.
