Active damping of mechanical drivetrain oscillations using generator voltage regulator
Apparatus and associated methods relate to active damping of mechanical oscillations of a synchronous generator's drivetrain by modulating an excitation signal provided to the synchronous generator in proper phase relation with detected mechanical oscillations so as to dampen these oscillations. The excitation signal includes a superposition of a voltage-regulation signal and an active-damping signal. The voltage-regulation signal is configured to regulate an output voltage of electrical power provided by the synchronous generator, and the active-damping signal is configured to provide active damping to the drivetrain of the mechanical system that includes the synchronous generator. The active-damping signal is generated by detecting mechanical oscillations of the drivetrain, filter such detected mechanical oscillations such that the active-damping signal has a proper phase relationship with the mechanical oscillations over a predetermined range of frequencies. This proper phase relationship is maintained over the range of frequencies using a second order lag/lead filter.
Active stability control of compression systems utilizing electric machines
The present disclosure is directed to turbine engines and systems for active stability control of rotating compression systems utilizing an electric machine operatively coupled thereto. In one exemplary aspect, an electric machine operatively coupled with a compression system, e.g., via a shaft system, is controlled to provide shaft damping for instability fluctuations of the pressurized fluid stream within the compression system. Based on control data indicative of a system state of the compression system, a control parameter of the electric machine is adjusted to control or change an output of the shaft system. Adjusting the shaft system output by adjusting one or more control parameters of the electric machine allows the compression system to dampen instability fluctuations of the fluid stream within the compression system. A method for active stability control of a compression system operatively coupled with an electric machine via a shaft system is also provided.

METHOD OF OPERATING A WIND TURBINE AND CONTROL SYSTEM
A method of operating a wind turbine wherein the wind turbine includes a doubly-fed induction generator that converts rotational mechanical power to electrical power. The method includes operating the wind turbine in a first operational mode in which a speed of a rotor of the wind turbine is controlled to maximize the power generation by the wind turbine. Upon a monitored parameter reaching or dropping below a respective threshold, the wind turbine is operated in a second operational mode. The monitored parameter may include at least one of the rotational speed of the rotor, the rotational speed of the doubly-fed induction generator, a wind speed, an active electrical power, or generator torque. Operating the wind turbine in the second operational mode may include increasing the rotational speed of the doubly-fed induction generator at the expense of the generation of active electrical power by the power generating system.
