Modular ladar sensor

A lightweight, inexpensive LADAR sensor incorporating 3-D focal plane arrays is adapted specifically for modular manufacture and rapid field configurability and provisioning. The sensor generates, at high speed, 3-D image maps and object data at short to medium ranges. The techniques and structures described may be used to extend the range of long range systems as well, though the focus is on compact, short to medium range ladar sensors suitable for use in multi-sensor television production systems and 3-D graphics capture and moviemaking. 3-D focal plane arrays are used in a variety of physical configurations to provide useful new capabilities.

A method of balancing colors of three-dimensional (3D) points measured by a scanner from a first location and a second location. The scanner measures 3D coordinates and colors of first object points from a first location and second object points from a second location. The scene is divided into local neighborhoods, each containing at least a first object point and a second object point. An adapted second color is determined for each second object point based at least in part on the colors of first object points in the local neighborhood.

The processing module includes processing circuitry configured to receive and process the captured images, and power circuitry configured to provide electrical power to the stereo imaging module via the coaxial cable. The plurality of image sensors may be color image sensors configured to collect color images for stereo image processing.
