Encoding and decoding image data
Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for encoding image data for one or more images. In one embodiment, a method includes the steps of downscaling the one or more images, and encoding the one or more downscaled images using an image codec. Another embodiment concerns a computer-implemented method of decoding encoded image data, and a computer-implemented method of encoding and decoding image data.
Methods and apparatus for encoding, communicating and/or using images
Methods and apparatus for capturing, communicating and using image data to support virtual reality experiences are described. Images, e.g., frames, are captured at a high resolution but lower frame rate than is used for playback. Interpolation is applied to captured frames to generate interpolated frames. Captured frames, along with interpolated frame information, are communicated to the playback device. The combination of captured and interpolated frames correspond to a second frame playback rate which is higher than the image capture rate. Cameras operate at a high image resolution but slower frame rate than images could be captured with the same cameras at a lower resolution. Interpolation is performed prior to delivery to the user device with segments to be interpolated being selected based on motion and/or lens FOV information. A relatively small amount of interpolated frame data is communicated compared to captured frame data for efficient bandwidth use.

Live Teleporting System and Apparatus
A method of producing a Pepper's Ghost, includes projecting an image of a subject onto a reflective and transparent screen to create a virtual image of the subject alongside an object, the subject in the virtual image having a colour temperature. The object is illuminated with light having a colour and intensity that results in a colour temperature of the object at least approximately matching the colour temperature of the subject in the virtual image. The subject in the virtual image has a luminance and may be illuminated with light having a colour and intensity that results in a luminance of the object at least approximately matching the luminance of the subject in the virtual image.

IMAGE CODING METHOD, IMAGE DECODING METHOD, IMAGE CODING APPARATUS, RECEIVING APPARATUS, AND TRANSMITTING APPARATUS
An image coding method of hierarchically coding a plurality of pictures to generate a bitstream, includes: coding each of the plurality of pictures, which belongs to any one of a plurality of hierarchical layers, with reference to a picture belonging to a hierarchical layer which is same as or lower than a hierarchical layer to which the picture belongs, and without reference to a picture belonging to a hierarchical layer which is higher than the hierarchical layer to which the picture belongs; and generating the bitstream by coding the coded pictures and time information indicating decoding times of the coded pictures. The time information indicates that the decoding times are set at equal intervals for low-layer pictures which are the plurality of pictures other than highest-layer pictures belonging to a highest layer among the plurality of hierarchical layers.

DIRECTED INTERPOLATION AND DATA POST-PROCESSING
An encoding device evaluates a plurality of processing and/or post-processing algorithms and/or methods to be applied to a video stream, and signals a selected method, algorithm, class or category of methods/algorithms either in an encoded bitstream or as side information related to the encoded bitstream. A decoding device or post-processor utilizes the signaled algorithm or selects an algorithm/method based on the signaled method or algorithm. The selection is based, for example, on availability of the algorithm/method at the decoder/post-processor and/or cost of implementation. The video stream may comprise, for example, downsampled multiplexed stereoscopic images and the selected algorithm may include any of upconversion and/or error correction techniques that contribute to a restoration of the downsampled images.

Video frame pulldown based on frame analysis
The described technology is directed towards generating a new video image sequence (e.g., for playback at 30 frames per second) based on an existing video image sequence (e.g., originated for playback at 24 frames per second). The technology is based on processing frames, e.g., adjacent pairs of frames in a four-frame sequence, to obtain candidate frames for selecting a similar candidate frame to insert into the original sequence to create the new sequence (e.g., a five-frame sequence). Aspects include selecting a repeated frame to insert or creating a new frame from existing frames to insert, to generate the new sequence based on a difference/scoring comparison.
