METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING MEDIA CONTENT TO A CLIENT

A method for providing media content within a media distribution network. The method comprises transforming source media content into an interim format, thereby providing transformed content. Furthermore, the method comprises storing the transformed content on at least one core storage unit. In addition, the method comprises receiving a request for the source media content from a client. The method further comprises encoding the transformed content or intermediate coded content derived therefrom into encoded content suitable for transmission over a core network and/or an edge network, as well as sending the encoded content via the core network and/or the edge network to the client.

Method and apparatus for identifying a single user requesting conflicting content and resolving said conflict

Systems and methods for automatically determining when a single party is playing or requesting conflicting content on two different devices, and resolving the conflict accordingly. Systems automatically identify when a single user is playing back a content stream on one device, then requests another content stream on another device. If the two content streams conflict, the conflict is automatically resolved in a number of ways, including by automatically pausing or redirecting one of the content streams. Conflict identification may also be carried out with the assistance of an added state flag that indicates a device or stream that has audio priority in a conflict. Thus, for example, when one user requests two conflicting content streams, and only one stream is associated with the conditional audio enabled flag, audio of the flagged stream may be played, while the other stream is muted.

Upstream sweep test with sweep server signaling

A network test instrument is operable to conduct sweep tests with a cable modem termination system having a distributed architecture. Through signaling performed via a telemetry channel between the network test instrument and a sweep server, the network test instrument can initiate the sweep test. The sweep server communicates with the cable modem termination system to facilitate the sweep test between the network test instrument and the cable modem termination system.

METHODS FOR DETERMINING LOCALIZED OUTAGES AND DISTRIBUTED SIGNAL VERIFICATION OF SET-TOP BOXES

Embodiments disclose systems and methods for testing and determining outages of communication systems. A server can receive signal-reception-related information from set-top boxes (STBs) in a particular geographical region, where a STB: receives signals having a predefined pattern, generates a comparison of the predefined pattern to reference patterns stored on the STB, generates the signal-reception-related information based on the comparison, and sends the signal-reception-related information. The server can determine an outage status for the particular geographical region based on the signal-reception-related information. The server can generate an output based on the outage status. The output is configured to provide information related to the outage status of the particular geographical region and information for possible responses related to the outage status. The server can send the output.

A multimedia redirection method comprising receiving, by a server, a hardware decoding capability sent by a client, where the hardware decoding capability is a hardware decoding capability that is in a video hardware acceleration specification and that is converted from a hardware decoding capability of a non-Windows operating system by the client; restoring, by the server, video data to a video code stream of a standard encoding format after receiving the hardware decoding capability; and sending, by the server, the video code stream to the client for decoding and display.

Ascertaining Events in Media

Disclosed are various embodiments relating to the identification of events that occur within a media item. In one embodiment, among others, a media item is rendered for display on client devices. A plurality of messages are received from client devices, wherein each of the messages comprises a timestamp indicating a time relative to a media item. The existence of an event in the media item is determined based at least in part on a clustering of at least a subset of the messages received.

PERSONALIZED MEDIA STREAMS

A method for providing a personalized media stream includes receiving a signal from a user to launch a personalized media stream, determining a current time, identifying a first time slot of a schedule into which the current time falls, identifying a first channel that is associated with the first time slot, wherein viewing history for the user indicates that the user has viewed the first channel during the first time slot in the past, automatically tuning the display device to the first channel in response to the signal, receiving, subsequent to the automatically tuning, a command from the user to pause a program playing on the first channel, identifying a second channel associated with a second time slot, wherein the second time slot occurs later in time that the first time slot, and buffering a portion of a program being shown on the second channel during the second time slot.

An information processing apparatus includes a predictor configured to predict a throughput of a network, to generate a first predicted value indicative of the predicted throughput, an acquirer configured to acquire, from a server apparatus connected to the network, a second predicted value indicative of a throughput of the network predicted by the server apparatus, a selector configured to select a predicted value with higher prediction accuracy from among the first predicted value and the second predicted value X2, and a requester configured to request a distribution apparatus to transmit a video with a quality based on the predicted value selected by the selector 125.

Cloud Queue Tombstone

Example techniques relate to cloud queue tombstones. An example implementation may involve a computing system receiving instructions to remove a particular media item from a playback queue. Based on the instructions, the computing system removes the particular media item from the playback queue and adds, to the playback queue, a tombstone indicator indicating that the particular media item has been removed from the playback queue. The computing system receives, from the media playback system, a request for a window of one or more media items from the playback queue. Based on the request, the computing system sends, to the media playback system, data representing a particular window of media items from the playback queue, wherein the particular window includes the tombstone indicator. The computing system detects a given tombstone removal trigger from among multiple tombstone removal triggers and based on the detecting, removes the tombstone indicator from the playback queue.

Methods and apparatus to estimate audience sizes of media using deduplication based on vector of counts sketch data

Methods and apparatus to estimate audience sizes using deduplication based on vector of counts sketch data are disclosed. An example apparatus to determine an audience size for media based on vector of counts sketch data includes: a coefficient analyzer to determine coefficient values of a polynomial based on variances, a covariance, and cardinalities corresponding to a first vector of counts from a first database and a second vector of counts from a second database; an overlap analyzer to determine a real root of the polynomial, the real root corresponding to an estimate of an overlap between the first vector of counts and the second vector of counts; and a report generator to estimate the audience size based on the estimate of the overlap and the cardinalities of the first vector of counts and the second vector of counts.
