A remote control system and related method for controlling a video device are presented. The remote control system contains a plurality of buttons arranged in a grid pattern that correspond to user selectable options displayed on a display screen arranged in the same grid pattern. The user selects options on the screen by pressing the corresponding button on the remote control.

A display device and a method capable of rotating a display based on a type of a user command are provided. The display device according to the disclosure receives a user command while first content is displayed on the display, the display being configured to operate in a first orientation while displaying the first content, maintains the display to operate in the first orientation when the received user command is a command to control a feature corresponding to the first content, determines, based on a type of a second content, to control the display to operate in the first orientation or a second orientation different from the first orientation when the received user command is a command to display the second content on the display, and controls the motor to rotate the display based on the determined first orientation or the second orientation.

A motor vehicle includes a rearview mirror display system with a visible surface and having a mirror mode and a display mode. The visible surface functions as a mirror in the mirror mode. The visible surface displays an electronically produced image in the display mode. An electronic processor is communicatively coupled to the rearview mirror display system. The electronic processor detects that the display mode is not operating properly, and, in response to the detecting, automatically switches the rearview mirror display system from the display mode to the mirror mode.

A standby power controller (SPC) supplies power to an appliance such as a television, and cuts power to the appliance if the appliance is going unused. The SPC includes first and second sensors, each detecting a type of user activity (such as user presence and remote control usage), and a switch which controls power to the appliance in dependence on the detection status of the first and second sensors, and also preferably in dependence on the prior detection status of at least one of the sensors at one or more points of time in the past.

In some aspects, the systems and methods receive a user query for a media asset, determine a query template in the user's profile matching the user's query, and identify and execute a supplemental function corresponding to the query template in addition to responding to the user's query. The user's profile is customized on the user's usage patterns of an interactive media guidance application. By monitoring the user's usage patterns and learning from the user's actions in conjunction with the user's natural language queries on which supplemental functions to execute, the interactive media guidance application may provide a smarter and more efficient user experience.

An application control system and method is adapted for use with an entertainment system of a type including a display such as a monitor or TV and having display functions. A control device may be conveniently held by a user and employs an imager. The control system and method images the screen of the TV or other display to detect distinctive markers displayed on the screen. This information is transmitted to the entertainment system for control of an application or is used by the control device to control an application.

In one general aspect, a method can include detecting at least one indicator of user-initiated interaction with a computing device, obtaining data related to a demographic of a user of the computing device, identifying a current state of the computing device, determining that content displayed on a first display device included in the computing device is to be casted to a second display device separate from the computing device based on the at least one indicator of the user-initiated interaction with the computing device, the data related to a demographic of a user of the computing device, and the current state of the computing device, and casting the content displayed on the first display device to the second display device.

A system for use in issuing commands to a plurality of appliances each of a specific one of a plurality of different appliance types includes a smart device adapted to transmit command communications and a plurality of low-energy consuming controllers each adapted to transmit a command to a one of the plurality of appliances of a specific one of the plurality of different appliance types in response to receipt of a command communication originating from the smart device.

A method, set-top box, and non-transitory computer readable medium are disclosed for presentation of audiovisual content with closed captions. The method includes receiving, via an input device interfaced with the electronic device, an instruction requesting a replay of previously viewed video content with closed captioning; sending, to the display device interfaced with the electronic device, one or more thumbnail images of the previously viewed video content to be displayed on the display device; receiving, via the input device interfaced with the electronic device, one of the one or more thumbnail images of the previously viewed video content being selected for replay of the previously viewed video content; and sending, to the display device interfaced with the electronic device, closed captioning with the previously viewed video content starting at a video frame corresponding to the one of the one or more thumbnails of the previously viewed video content selected for replay.
