An optical routing system for free space optical communication is disclosed. The system has a transmitter and a receiver that use free space optical communication, and includes an optical path based on waveguide where an optical signal is routed from the proximity of the transmitter to the proximity of the destination. This system has advantages in terms of mitigating line-of-sight issues, as well as potentially reducing the overall coupling loss that would be otherwise incurred due to beam divergence of free space propagation for long distance.

MULTIPLEXED SINGLE PHOTON SOURCE USING ONE-WAY SWITCHING ELEMENTS

A multiplexed single photon source for quasi-deterministically generating single photons, wherein heralded random single photons generated by pulsed random single photon source are sent through a series of optical switches each having first and second input and output modes and each capable of being switched from a first state corresponding to a SWAP operation to a second state corresponding to an Identity operation on the mode space, whereby the first and second input and output modes of the switches are connected in series to form a first and second optical path respectively, and whereby a first output mode of a last optical switch forms the output mode of the multiplexed single photon source and a second output mode of the last optical switch is connected by a delay loop introducing a time delay T.sub.d to the second input mode of a first optical switch. It furthermore relates to a method of quasi-deterministically generating single photons with such a multiplexed single photon source, the method comprising initializing, before or at the start of a first cycle, the first switch in the first state and all subsequent switches in the second state; switching, when the generation of a random single photon is heralded, the first switch to the second state after that photon has been routed onto the closed optical path formed by the second optical path and the delay loop, thereby ensuring that the photon may loop around the closed optical path; and, switching, at the start of the Nth cycle, a last switch of the series of optical switches into the first state, thereby causing the photon to be routed out of the closed optical path and into the output mode of the multiplexed single photon source, such that the photon is output quasi-deterministically at a time N Td after the start of the first cycle.

A method for creating a hybrid electric and optical data center network is provided with a plurality of servers, a plurality of ToR/EoR switches, and an optical central switch. Each of the plurality servers maintains an electronic connection with a corresponding ToR/EoR switch from the plurality of switches. The plurality of ToR/EoR switches is interconnected to each other electronically and optically. The optical central switch in conjunction with a plurality of tunable transceivers allows a signal originating from any of the plurality of the servers, to traverse the data center network to reach any destination server. To do so, wavelength switching takes place via the plurality of transceivers at each of the ToR/EoR switches. Simultaneously, space switching takes place within the center switch. By utilizing the method, intra data center bandwidth is optimized and the network the method is utilized in is non-blocking.

OPTICALLY-SWITCHED DATA NETWORK
20170359637 · 2017-12-14 · ·

An optically-switch data network includes an optical data bus, an optical wavelength bus, and multiple nodes connected by the optical data bus and the optical wavelength bus. A first node determines that it has communication information to transmit to a second node, and determines if a first subscription signal is present on the optical wavelength bus. The first subscription signal includes a target frequency. If the first subscription signal is not present on the optical wavelength bus, the first node injects an optical communication signal onto the optical data bus. The optical communication signal includes the communication information and a carrier wave. The carrier wave includes the target frequency. The second node receives the optical communication signal using the optical data bus. If the first subscription signal is present on the optical wavelength bus, injection of the optical communication signal onto the optical data bus is postponed.

A system and method for connectivity configuration of a network node permits an optical signal to be passed through the node and shifted from a first connector position to a second connector position that is offset from the first connector position. The shifted optical signal permits a number of distant nodes in the network to be reached with a direct optical connection, which can be configured to be bidirectional. The disclosed connectivity configuration reduces the cabling requirements for the network and simplifies the interconnections.
