A user equipment (UE) may calculate one or more parameters associated with a quality of communications between the UE and a base station. The UE may determine a bitrate for performing the communications based on the one or more calculated parameters prior to receiving a bitrate recommendation from the base station, and the UE may transmit, prior to receiving the bitrate recommendation from the base station, a request to perform the communications in accordance with the determined bitrate. The base station may determine whether to accept the requested bitrate, and perform the communications with the UE in accordance with the determination.
