Technologies for energy-modulated radiation therapy
Described are devices, systems, and methods for modulating the spectral energy distribution produced by an x-ray source via control of the energy of the x-ray-generating electron beam, e.g., for energy-modulated radiation therapy or other purposes. In some embodiments, such energy modulation is achieved by an add-on device to a linear accelerator. Also disclosed are computational methods and computer program products for planning energy-modulated therapy.

ENERGY SELECTION SYSTEM FOR COMPACT PROTON THERAPY
A proton treatment system including a proton accelerator structured to generate a proton beam, a beamline pathway configured to direct the proton beam from the proton accelerator to at least one treatment room, a magnet assembly, including superconducting magnets, located in the beamline pathway and configured to transport the proton beam away from the accelerator into the at least one treatment room, an achromat, configured as an achromatic superconducting magnet assembly, that bends the proton beam away from the proton accelerator toward the at least one treatment room, and a collimator provided inside the achromat and configured to select the proton beam with desired energy levels.
Techniques for particle beam therapy
A method for beam therapy is provided. The method includes receiving first data indicating a plurality of target volumes within a target region inside a subject for particle beam therapy relative to a particle beam outlet on a gantry for directing a particle beam from a particle beam source. The method further includes moving automatically, one or more energy modulator components to reduce an energy of the particle beam and deliver the particle beam to the target region such that a Bragg Peak is delivered to at least one target volume of the plurality of target volumes. The method further includes repeating the moving automatically as the particle beam source rotates with the gantry around the subject, without changing the energy of the particle beam at the particle beam outlet, until every target volume is subjected to a Bragg Peak.
ACCELERATOR AND PARTICLE BEAM IRRADIATION SYSTEM
An accelerator 4 includes a circular vacuum container including circular return yokes 5A, 5B. An injection electrode 18 is disposed closer to an inlet of a beam extraction path 20 in the return yoke 5B than a central axis C of the vacuum container. Magnetic poles 7A to 7F are radially disposed from the injection electrode 18 at the periphery of the injection electrode 18 in the return yoke 5B. Recessions 29A to 29F are disposed alternately with the magnetic poles 7A to 7F in the circumferential direction of the return yoke 5B. In the vacuum container, a concentric trajectory region, in which multiple beam turning trajectories centered around the injection electrode 18 are present, is formed, and an eccentric trajectory region, in which multiple beam turning trajectories eccentric from the injection electrode 18 are present, is formed around the region.
Particle beam therapy system
A particle beam therapy system is disclosed which includes: a synchrotron accelerating a charged particle beam injected from a pre-accelerator up to a predetermined energy level before applying a high-frequency voltage to an extraction device to extract the charged particle beam caused to exceed a stability limit; a beam transportation system transporting the charged particle beam extracted from the synchrotron up to a treatment room, and an irradiation device irradiating a patient in the treatment room with the charged particle beam in conformity to the patient's tumor shape. The synchrotron has functionality to accelerate or decelerate the charged particle beam successively to extract the charged particle beam at a plurality of energy levels during an extraction phase of the synchrotron, the beam transportation system further having functionality to block off an unnecessary charged particle beam extracted from the synchrotron during acceleration or deceleration.
PARTICLE BEAM THERAPY SYSTEM, RIDGE FILTER, AND METHOD OF MAKING RIDGE FILTER
A structure configuring a ridge filter has line symmetry about a line vertical to a depth direction passing the center of the structure. A small structure obtained in such a way that the structure is divided by this line has a bilaterally asymmetric shape about a center line in an iterative direction, and has a point symmetric shape about an intersection between the center line in the iterative direction and the center line in the depth direction. Thicknesses in the iterative direction of an uppermost stream surface and a lowermost stream surface in the depth direction are equal to each other. The structure is configured so that a thick portion in the iterative direction of the uppermost stream surface and the lowermost stream surface is not present in the depth direction.
ROTATING ENERGY DEGRADER
Embodiments disclose an energy degrader for attenuating the energy of a charged particle beam, comprising a first energy attenuation member presenting a beam entry face having the shape of a part of a first helical surface, a second energy attenuation member presenting a beam exit face having the shape of a part of a second helical surface, the beam exit face being positioned downstream of said beam entry face with respect to the beam direction, and a drive assembly for rotating the first and/or the second energy attenuation members about respectively a first and/or a second rotation axis while crossed by the particle beam. The first and second helical surfaces are continuous surfaces and have the same handedness, to enable a more compact degrader with a smaller moment of inertia.
System for the irradiation of a target material
A capsule for the transfer of a target material in a conveying system between a target irradiation station and a collecting station comprising: a beamline channel for the passage of an energetic beam irradiating the target material, a target holder holding the target material or a substrate backing the target material at a glancing angle with respect to the beamline channel axis, a degrader foil positioned across the beamline channel for degrading an energy of the energetic beam upstream of the target material, a target cooling inlet and a target cooling outlet for passage of a cooling fluid in a target cooling duct in a vicinity of the target holder such that the target material can be cooled during an irradiation, and a degrader foil cooling inlet and a degrader foil cooling outlet for passage of a cooling gas in a vicinity of the degrader foil.
