Homogenization and heat-treatment of cast metals
A method of casting a metal ingot with a microstructure that facilitates further working, such as hot and cold rolling. The metal is cast in a direct chill casting mold, or the equivalent, that directs a spray of coolant liquid onto the outer surface of the ingot to achieve rapid cooling. The coolant is removed from the surface at a location where the emerging embryonic ingot is still not completely solid, such that the latent heat of solidification and the sensible heat of the molten core raises the temperature of the adjacent solid shell to a convergence temperature that is above a transition temperature for in-situ homogenization of the metal. A further conventional homogenization step is then not required. The invention also relates to the heat-treatment of such ingots prior to hot working.
Bearing housing of an exhaust-gas turbocharger
A bearing housing (1) of an exhaust-gas turbocharger, having a compressor-side housing flange (2), a central housing section (3) which is integrally connected to the housing flange (2) and in which a first partial section (4) of an oil chamber (5) is arranged; and a turbine-side housing section (6) which has a turbine-side housing flange (7) and in which a second partial section (8) of the oil chamber (5) is formed. The central housing section (3) and the turbine-side housing section (6) are formed in one piece. A bearing housing (9) which forms a separate component is inserted into the central housing section (3) and into the turbine-side housing section (6), with these delimiting the oil chamber (5).
ALUMINUM IMPACT EXTRUDED BOTTLE WITH THREADED NECK MADE FROM RECYCLED ALUMINUM AND ENHANCED ALLOYS
The present invention relates generally to forming a threaded neck in a metal bottle manufactured by a process known as impact extrusion. More specifically, the present invention relates to methods, apparatus and alloy compositions used in the impact extrusion manufacturing of containers and other articles with sufficient strength characteristics to allow threading the container necks to receive a threaded closure on the threaded neck.
Surgical clip applicator and manufacturing method therefor
A method for manufacturing a surgical clip applicator comprises metal injection molding a pair of jaws. The method further comprises stamping a U-shaped body portion having a pair of laterally spaced arms and an integral bridge extending between the arms to define a gap. The method comprises welding a jaw to a corresponding arm by electron beam welding or other welding processes and removing the bridge to form the clip applicator. In some embodiments, the bridge is optional.
Process for forming a single crystal superalloy wave spring
A process for forming a single crystal superalloy wave spring is provided. In one embodiment, the process may include machining a wave spring from a single crystal superalloy slab after optimizing its orientation using diffraction techniques so that the wave spring will exhibit optimal spring properties.
Golf club head having a composite crown
A golf club head has a high COR, is durable, and has desirable acoustic qualities. The club head includes a body portion, a striking face and a crown forming a hollow cavity of at least 150 cc in volume. The body portion defines a front opening and an upper opening, and it includes a sole and a side section that extends rearward of the front opening. The striking plate is secured to the body portion, enclosing the front opening. While partially assembled, final weighting and/or other attachment of other members to the inner surface of the club head can be preformed, as desired. The crown is secured to the body portion, enclosing the upper opening. A surface veil may also be provided about a junction of the crown and body.
Brake caliper housing method of manufacture
A method of making a brake caliper housing includes providing a first die and a second die that cooperate to define a cavity when disposed against each other along a mating plane. The method further includes introducing molten material into the cavity to cast the brake caliper housing. One or more surfaces of the brake caliper housing may be machined.
