Abstract
The disclosure extends to methods, devices, and systems for removing speckle from a coherent light source, such as laser light. The methods, devices, and systems help eliminate or reduce speckle introduced from a coherent light source, such as laser light, by utilizing the teachings and principles of the disclosure.
Claims
1. A system for removing speckle from an image frame from a surgical site comprising: an imaging device comprising an image sensor, wherein the image sensor comprises a pixel array; an endoscopic device; a coherent light source for providing light to a surgical site; a control unit comprising circuitry for sending data to the image sensor and receiving data from the image sensor to create an image frame of the surgical site; a display that allows a user to visualize the surgical site; a fiber optic bundle connected to the coherent light source; and a vibrating mechanism attached to the fiber optic bundle that causes the light to lose coherence momentarily as the geometry of its path is changed, thereby substantially removing any speckle from the frame of the surgical site.
2. The system of claim 1, wherein the introduction of a vibration stimulus to the fiber optic bundle introduces a series of changes in path geometry.
3. The system of claim 2, wherein the series of changes are performed at a high frequency so that the observable speckle pattern is substantially removed, such that a human eye cannot detect the speckle pattern when the video is output to the display.
4. The system of claim 1, wherein the imaging device is in electronic communication with the control unit.
5. The system of claim 1, wherein the imaging sensor is a CMOS sensor.
6. The system of claim 1, wherein the imaging sensor is a CCD sensor.
7. The system of claim 1, wherein the vibrating mechanism comprises a connector, a vibrating device, a cavity formed within the connector for receiving and holding the vibrating device therein, and a sleeve.
8. The system of claim 7, wherein the vibrating device is selected from a group consisting of a small mechanical motor, a piezoelectric crystal, an oscillator, and a resonator component.
9. The system of claim 7, wherein the sleeve is a plurality of sleeves comprising a first sleeve and a second sleeve for attaching to a first fiber optic bundle and a second fiber optic bundle respectively.
10. The system of claim 1, wherein the vibrating mechanism comprises a vibrating device only that is attached to the fiber optic bundle.
11. The system of claim 10, wherein the vibrating device is selected from a group consisting of a small mechanical motor, a piezoelectric crystal, an oscillator, and a resonator component.
12. A method for removing speckle from an image frame from a surgical site comprising: illuminating a surgical site with a coherent light source, wherein the coherent light source is connected to a fiber optic bundle, and wherein the fiber optic bundle is connected to an endoscopic device; sending data from an image sensor to a control unit wherein the data represents a frame of the surgical site, and wherein the data is generated from light received within a pixel array; receiving the data from the image sensor at the control unit; creating an image of the frame of the surgical site at the control unit; displaying the frame of the surgical site to a user, thereby allowing a user to visualize the surgical site; vibrating the fiber optic bundle, thereby causing the light to lose coherence momentarily as the geometry of its path is changed; and substantially removing any speckle from the frame of the surgical site.
13. The method of claim 12, wherein the step of vibrating comprises the introducing a vibration stimulus to the fiber optic bundle thereby creating a series of changes in path geometry.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the series of changes are performed at a high frequency so that the observable speckle pattern is substantially removed, such that a human eye cannot detect the speckle pattern when the video is output to the display.
15. The method of claim 12, wherein sending data from an image sensor to a control unit comprises providing an imaging device that is in electronic communication with the control unit, wherein the imaging device comprises the image sensor.
16. The method of claim 12, wherein the image sensor is a CMOS sensor.
17. The method of claim 12, wherein the image sensor is a CCD sensor.
18. The method of claim 12, wherein a vibrating mechanism performs the step of vibrating and comprises a connector, a vibrating device, a cavity formed within the connector for receiving and holding the vibrating device therein, and a sleeve.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein the vibrating device is selected from a group consisting of a small mechanical motor, a piezoelectric crystal, an oscillator, and a resonator component.
20. The method of claim 18, wherein the sleeve is a plurality of sleeves comprising a first sleeve and a second sleeve for attaching to a first fiber optic bundle and a second fiber optic bundle respectively.

[0016] The disclosure extends to methods, devices, and systems for removing speckle from a coherent light source, such as laser light. The methods, devices, and systems of the disclosure help eliminate or reduce speckle introduced from a coherent light source, such as laser light, by utilizing the teachings and principles of the disclosure. In the following description of the disclosure, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, and in which is shown by way of illustration specific implementations in which the disclosure may be practiced. It is understood that other implementations may be utilized and structural changes may be made without departing from the scope of the disclosure.

[0021] Referring now to the figures, it will be appreciated that speckle from a coherent light source, such as laser light, used for endoscopy may be removed by vibrating a fiber optic bundle that carries the light from the light source to a surgical site. The removal of speckle may be achieved by attaching a vibrating mechanism to the fiber optic bundle at some location along the length of the fiber optic bundle. It will be appreciated that light loses coherence momentarily as the geometry of its path changes. When the new path comes to rest, a new speckle pattern will appear. Introducing vibration to the fiber is essentially introducing a series of changes in path geometry, and if the change in path geometry is performed at a fast enough frequency the observable speckle pattern may be substantially eliminated or removed, such that a human eye cannot detect the speckle pattern.

In a limited use device platform the device can be used for some specified amount of times before becoming inoperable. Typical new device is delivered sterile with additional uses requiring the end-user to clean and sterilize before additional uses.
