An example method may involve identifying that a software update is available for a smart infrastructure system. The example method may also involve determining, by a processor of the smart infrastructure system and using a signal strength between a first vehicle and the smart infrastructure system, that the first vehicle is within a threshold range of the smart infrastructure system. The example method may also involve establishing, by the smart infrastructure system, a first ad-hoc peer-to-peer communication link with the first vehicle. The example method may also involve sending, to the vehicle, a request for the software update. The example method may also involve receiving, from the vehicle, at least a first portion of the software update that is transferred using the first ad-hoc peer-to-peer communication link.

The present disclosure provides a system-level protection system and method for sub/super-synchronous resonance/oscillation. The system includes a centralized protection coordinator arranged in a control center and a plurality of distributed protection relays arranged in a plurality of transformer substations or wind farms. Each distributed protection relay is configured to acquire a sub/super-synchronous impedance of the wind farm. The centralized protection coordinator is configured to acquire the sub/super-synchronous impedances measured by the plurality of distributed protection relays, to obtain a sub/super-synchronous aggregate impedance of the system according to a preset circuit topology and the sub/super-synchronous impedances, and to generate a system-level protection signal when the sub/super-synchronous aggregate impedance does not meet a stable condition. Each distributed protection relay is further configured to initiate a system-level protection according to the system-level protection signal.

A method and system to control distributed energy resources in an electric power system includes generation, storage and controllable loads. The system uses time synchronized measurements of voltage phasor and current phasors and their derivative information that may include real and reactive power to regulate and decouple both static and dynamic effects of real and reactive power flow through the local electric power system connected to the area electric power system. The method and system provides precise real and reactive power demand set point pairs; damping of real and reactive power fluctuations in the local electric power system; decoupling between real and reactive power demand response set points by means of a multivariable control system that uses time synchronized measurements of voltage and current phasors and their derivative information.

A method may include receiving raw data samples of currents in grounding conductors and line conductors. The method may also include processing the raw data samples under at least one of a plurality of system operating modes. The method may also include monitoring normal operation and anticipating an impending fault while operating under at least one of the system operating modes. The method may further include extracting fault information based on the monitoring. The method may also include reporting the fault information to a supervisory control and data acquisition system human-machine interface. The method may further include anticipating faults based on an analysis of the raw data samples.

We describe a modular adjustable power factor renewable energy inverter system. The system comprises a plurality of inverter modules having a switched capacitor across its ac power output, a power measurement system coupled to a communication interface, and a power factor controller to control switching of the capacitor. A system controller receives power data from each inverter module, sums the net level of ac power from each inverter, determines a number of said capacitors to switch based on the sum, and sends control data to an appropriate number of the inverter modules to switch the determined number of capacitors into/out of said parallel connection across their respective ac power outputs.
