LOST MOTION ROCKER BRAKE BIASING AND STROKE LIMITING SYSTEMS

Systems for valve actuation in internal combustion engines provide for control of rocker arms and other valvetrain components by utilizing biasing and stroke limited components. Such features may be implemented in any valvetrain component, including e-foot assemblies or pushrod assemblies. The biasing component may bias the cam side of a lost motion rocker toward the cam. The components may be extendable to permit a biasing mechanism to keep the valvetrain components in a controlled position at all times. Stroke limiting features may facilitate the formation of small gaps between valvetrain components during the engine cycle for improved lubrication. Stroke limiting features may also retain valvetrain components in an assembled configuration even when not installed in an engine or valve actuation system.

The valve drive device has an axially displaceable cam element and an adjusting device with a first engagement element which displaces the cam element axially into a first switching position and a second engagement element which displaces the cam element axially into a second switching position. The adjusting device has a first slotted guide track in which the first engagement element is guided in the first switching position and a second slotted guide track in which the second engagement element is guided in the second switching position. The first engagement element is positively coupled to the second engagement element. The adjusting device includes a triggering device which holds the first engagement element fixedly in the second switching position counter to a restoring force. A method for axial displacement of a rotating cam element is also disclosed.

A valve drive device for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The valve drive device has an axially displaceable cam element and an adjusting device with a first engagement element which displaces the cam element axially into a first switching position and a second engagement element which displaces the cam element axially into a second switching position. The adjusting device has a first slotted guide track in which the first engagement element is guided in the first switching position and a second slotted guide track in which the second engagement element is guided in the second switching position. The first engagement element is positively coupled to the second engagement element. The adjusting device includes a triggering device which holds the first engagement element fixedly in the second switching position counter to a restoring force. A method for axial displacement of a rotating cam element is also disclosed.

Cylinder deactivation and engine brake mechanism for type III center pivot valvetrains

A rocker assembly for a type III center pivot valvetrain comprises a rocker arm comprising a cam end, a center pivot bore, and a valve end. The valve end comprises a first actuator bore and a second actuator bore. A cylinder deactivation actuator is in the first actuator bore. An engine brake actuator is in the second actuator bore. The rocker assembly can be part of a valve assembly and can impart an engine braking function, a cylinder deactivation function, and a main lift function to first and second valves. It is also possible to impart an early exhaust valve opening, a main lift function, and a late exhaust valve closing to the engine braking valve.

Engine system and operation method using engine braking mechanisms for early exhaust valve opening

A valve actuation system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine has a first set of cylinders having a first set of exhaust valves and a second set of cylinders having a second set of exhaust valves. The valve actuation system for the exhaust valves includes one or more first cams having a compression-release lobe and a main exhaust lobe adapted to transfer valve actuation motion to the first set of exhaust valves, and one or more second cams having an early exhaust valve opening (EEVO) lobe and a main exhaust lobe adapted to transfer valve actuation motion to the second set of exhaust valves. The valve actuation system may provide any combination of (i) main exhaust valve actuation with or without compression release actuation with (ii) main exhaust valve actuation with or without EEVO for the two sets of cylinders.

Engine system and operation method using engine braking mechanisms for early exhaust valve opening

A valve actuation system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine has a first set of cylinders having a first set of exhaust valves and a second set of cylinders having a second set of exhaust valves. The valve actuation system for the exhaust valves includes one or more first cams having a compression-release lobe and a main exhaust lobe adapted to transfer valve actuation motion to the first set of exhaust valves, and one or more second cams having an early exhaust valve opening (EEVO) lobe and a main exhaust lobe adapted to transfer valve actuation motion to the second set of exhaust valves. The valve actuation system may provide any combination of (i) main exhaust valve actuation with or without compression release actuation with (ii) main exhaust valve actuation with or without EEVO for the two sets of cylinders.

Control apparatus for engine

A control apparatus for an engine is provided. The control apparatus includes an intake control valve controller for fully closing, when an engine stop request is issued, an intake control valve for adjusting a flow rate of intake air passing through an intake passage of the engine, an engine speed increase controller for increasing an engine speed to reach a target speed after the intake control valve is fully closed by the intake control valve controller, and a fuel injection stopper for stopping a fuel injection after the engine speed is increased by the engine speed increase controller.

LOST MOTION MECHANISMS AND ACTUATORS

A lost motion mechanism can comprise a castellation device, comprising a casing, an upper castellation, and a lower castellation. The casing can comprise a first linear slot and a second linear slot perpendicular to the first linear slot. Upper castellation can comprise an upper body, spaced upper teeth extending from the upper body, the spaced upper teeth forming spaced upper gaps therebetween, and an actuation peg extending from the upper body into the first linear slot. Lower castellation can comprise a lower body, spaced lower teeth extending from the lower body, the spaced lower teeth forming spaced lower gaps therebetween, and an anti-rotation peg extending from the lower body into the second linear slot. An actuator can be configured with the lost motion mechanism so that a movable arm comprises a forked end configured to move on the actuation peg as the movable arm swivels.

A lost motion mechanism can comprise a castellation device, comprising a casing, an upper castellation, and a lower castellation. The casing can comprise a first linear slot and a second linear slot perpendicular to the first linear slot. Upper castellation can comprise an upper body, spaced upper teeth extending from the upper body, the spaced upper teeth forming spaced upper gaps therebetween, and an actuation peg extending from the upper body into the first linear slot. Lower castellation can comprise a lower body, spaced lower teeth extending from the lower body, the spaced lower teeth forming spaced lower gaps therebetween, and an anti-rotation peg extending from the lower body into the second linear slot. An actuator can be configured with the lost motion mechanism so that a movable arm comprises a forked end configured to move on the actuation peg as the movable arm swivels.
