OPEN ROTOR TURBOMACHINERY ENGINES
A turbomachinery engine includes an unducted rotor assembly, a low-pressure turbine, a low-pressure shaft, a gearbox, and an engine correlation parameter. The unducted rotor assembly includes a plurality of rotor blades arranged in a single row and defining a blade diameter. The gearbox includes an input, an output, and a gear ratio. The input of the gearbox is coupled to the low-pressure shaft (which is coupled to the LPT), and the output of the gearbox is coupled to the unducted rotor assembly. The engine correlation parameter is greater than 0.17 and less than 0.83. The engine correlation parameter equals D/N/GR, where D is the blade tip diameter measured in feet, N is the stage count of the low-pressure turbine, and GR is the gear ratio of the gearbox. The unducted propulsor assembly optionally includes a disk loading within a range of 60-180 HP/ft.sup.2 at a takeoff flight condition.
Unducted thrust producing system
An unducted thrust producing system has a rotating element with an axis of rotation and a stationary element. The rotating element includes a plurality of blades, each having a blade root proximal to the axis, a blade tip remote from the axis, and a blade span measured between the blade root and the blade tip. The rotating element has a load distribution such that at any location between the blade root and 30% span the value of ΔRCu in the air stream is greater than or equal to 60% of the peak ΔRCu in the air stream.
BOSS FOR GAS TURBINE ENGINE
A gas turbine engine, has: a case extending circumferentially around a central axis of the gas turbine engine; a boss protruding from the case away from the central axis, the boss defining an internal passage; a tubular member received within the internal passage of the boss and secured to the boss; an annular gap extending all around the tubular member and located between the tubular member and the boss; and a fitting hydraulically connecting a fluid source to the tubular member, the fitting having a portion received within the tubular member and encircled by both of the annular gap and the tubular member, the fitting sealingly engaged to the tubular member.
Mount for an airfoil
A gas turbine engine is provided. The gas turbine engine defines a radial direction. The engine includes: an airfoil positioned within an airflow and extending between a root end and a tip along the radial direction; and a mount coupled to or formed integrally with the root end of the airfoil for mounting the airfoil to the engine, the mount including an outer surface along the radial direction exposed to the airflow and defining an air-cooling channel extending between an inlet and an outlet, the inlet positioned on the outer surface of the mount.
System and method for control for unducted engine
A computing system for an unducted rotor engine with a variable pitch vane assembly in aerodynamic relationship with an unducted rotor assembly, including a sensor-based controller configured to execute a first set of operations and a model-based controller configured to execute a second set of operations. The first set of operations includes obtaining a first signal corresponding to a commanded low spool speed; obtaining a second signal indicative of a pitch angle corresponding to thrust output from the unducted rotor assembly and variable pitch vane assembly; generating a pitch feedback signal corresponding to a commanded adjustment to the pitch angle based at least on one or both of a variable blade pitch angle or a variable vane pitch angle. The second set of operations include obtaining a desired thrust output via a throttle input; determining, at least via a power management block, a commanded thrust output signal; receiving the commanded thrust output signal; and generating an output signal.
GEARBOX FOR AN ENGINE
A gearbox for an engine includes a rotating element and a turbomachine, the turbomachine includes a shaft, and the rotating element is driven by the shaft across the gearbox. The gearbox includes a ring gear, a first sun gear and a second sun gear each configured to be driven by the shaft of the turbomachine, a first planet gear comprising a first gear portion and a second gear portion, and a second planet gear comprising a first gear portion and a second gear portion.
VARIABLE PITCH BLADED DISC
A variable pitch bladed disc including a plurality of blades, each being of variable pitch about a blade axis of rotation and having a root, the plurality of blades including at least one first blade and at least one second blade, a plurality of rotor connecting shafts, each shaft having a root and a tip, the root of each blade being mounted on the tip of a corresponding rotor connecting shaft via a pivot so as to allow each blade to be rotated about the blade axis of rotation, the first blade having a first rotation axis inclination such that the rotation axis thereof is inclined in a fixed manner with respect to a radial axis passing through the root of the corresponding shaft, and the second blade has a second rotation axis inclination different from the first rotation axis inclination.
In flight restart system and method for free turbine engine
There is described a method and system for in-flight start of an engine. The method comprises rotating a propeller; generating electrical power at an electric generator embedded inside a propeller hub from rotation of the propeller; transmitting the electrical power from the electric generator to an engine starter mounted on a core of the engine via an electric power link; and driving the engine with the engine starter to a sufficient speed while providing fuel to a combustor to light the engine to achieve self-sustaining operation of the engine.
ENGINE WITH START ASSIST
An engine comprises a first power input and a second power input, a main load, and a transmission engaged with the first power input, the second power input, and the main load. An epicyclic gear train is engaged with the first power input and the main load. A brake in a drive condition engages with the epicyclic gear train to transfer power from the first power input to the main load. The brake in a start condition disengages from the epicyclic gear train to decouple the first power input from the main load. A start assist motor is engaged with part of the transmission separate from the epicyclic gear train. The start assist motor in the start condition rotates the main load to initiate start up of the engine, and in the drive condition prevents transferring power to the main load.
