When a checkout apparatus 10 serving as a money handling apparatus detects that change is left behind after dispensing of the change in a settlement mode, the checkout apparatus 10 shifts from a settlement mode to a left money retaining mode. Upon receiving money in the left money retaining mode, the checkout apparatus 10 stores information on the amount of the money, date and time of the reception, etc., in a memory, thereby managing the left money separately from proceeds from sales. Since the same money handling unit as that for the settlement is used for storage and feeding of the left money, miniaturization and cost reduction of the apparatus is realized. Since money equivalent to the left money can be dispensed as in the settlement, a complicated operation, such as opening a housing of the checkout apparatus 10, is not necessary when responding to a request for a refund of the left money.

A money handling system configured to handle cash that is given and received when commodity transaction is performed, is composed of: a cash settlement apparatus configured to, in a case where cash corresponding to a difference between a total amount of deposited money paid for a commodity price by a customer and the commodity price is required to be paid as change to the customer, execute either a process of dispensing the change or a process of issuing a change ticket including information that specifies an amount of the change; a change handling apparatus configured to, in order to pay not-yet-dispensed change to the customer, obtain the information included in the change ticket and specify an amount of the not-yet-dispensed change; and a cash management apparatus communicably connected to the cash settlement apparatus and the change handling apparatus, and configured to manage information regarding the not-yet-dispensed change for which the change ticket has been issued. The change that has not been dispensed from the cash settlement apparatus can be dispensed from the change handling apparatus by using the change ticket.

In one embodiment, a money dispensing device has a storage device, an attaching/detaching mechanism and a control device. The attaching/detaching mechanism detachably supports a storage bag. When the storage device to store money has overflowed, the money stored in the storage device is discharged to a storage bag. The control device outputs information indicating that the storage bag is not attached when the storage bag is not attached to the attaching/detaching mechanism.

A money handling method, which is performed by an information processing apparatus in a money handling system including a plurality of money handling apparatuses and the information processing apparatus, includes: determining a denomination and quantity of money to be moved between the respective money handling apparatuses; performing a simulation, based on the determined denomination and quantity of money, money handling processes to be performed for moving the money between the plurality of apparatuses; performing a determination, based on a result of the simulation, whether or not all the money can be moved between the respective apparatuses; and notifying a result of the determination.

A money handling method, which is performed by an information processing apparatus in a money handling system including a plurality of money handling apparatuses and the information processing apparatus, includes: determining a denomination and quantity of money to be moved between the respective money handling apparatuses; performing a simulation, based on the determined denomination and quantity of money, money handling processes to be performed for moving the money between the plurality of apparatuses; performing a determination, based on a result of the simulation, whether or not all the money can be moved between the respective apparatuses; and notifying a result of the determination.

Apparatus and methods relating to a counter recycling device are described. The counter recycling device may contain a receiving pocket, a counter mechanism, an escrow section, and an escrow door. The receiving pocket is configured to accept currency and is connected to the counter mechanism. The counter mechanism may be configured to count the currency inserted into the receiving pocket. The counter recycling device may also include an escrow section, which may be configured to collect and hold the currency in a secure area. Additionally, the counter recycling device may include an escrow door configured to enclose the escrow section on a face of the counter recycling device, the escrow door being transparent and allowing currency within the escrow section to be viewable when the escrow door is in a closed position.

A computer system for recycling value instruments in an automated teller machine has a memory storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the system to receive an image of a value instrument obtained by an automated teller machine for deposit. The image of the value instrument is analyzed to determine its condition. Then, based on the condition of the value instrument, it may be determined that the value instrument is suitable for recycling to fulfill withdrawals. Upon determining that the value instrument is suitable for recycling to fulfill withdrawals, recycling of the value instrument by the automated teller machine is initiated and an indication reflecting the recycling is generated so as to influence when a next servicing of the automated teller machine will occur. An arrangement for processing of value documents at a preparation station, prior to their processing by means of a value document processing apparatus, involves inserting the value documents into a container divided into several storage regions. The value documents of the respective deposit are removed at the preparation station from delivery containers which respectively include a unique deposit identification. A monitoring device automatically captures into which storage region of the value document container the value documents are inserted. A protocol device connected to the monitoring device links the respective deposit identification to the container identification and to the respective storage region identification and transmits this linking information to a control device or to an accounting device, which assigns the value documents present in the respective storage region of the respective value document container to the respective deposit with the aid of the linking information transmitted by the protocol device.
