System and method for controlling a vehicle using contextual navigation assistance

Controlling a vehicle using contextual navigation assistance can include defining a context for the vehicle using sensor data for a plurality of time points while the vehicle traverses between a starting and stopping location, the context being one of multiple contexts, and each associated with at least one candidate variable for inclusion in an ordered representation of information, classifying the vehicle into a phase of multiple phases associated with different proximities of the vehicle to a maneuver, each phase associated with at least one candidate variable for inclusion in the ordered representation, and generating, using the phase and the context, the ordered representation. The ordered representation is ranked from most likely to least likely information that is necessary, during a current phase, to successfully complete the maneuver. The ordered representation is produced by a user interface so that it can be used to control the vehicle.

A method of providing turning path guidance for a vehicle includes determining parameters of a turn region of a roadway using a controller of the turning path guidance system. The parameters include lane data and turning angle data. Positions of objects in and around the turn region of the roadway are detected using a sensor system of the vehicle. A map of the turn region is generated based on the lane data, turning angle data and that shows the detected objects using the controller. A turning path for the vehicle for navigating the turn in the turn region that avoids the detected objects is determined using the controller. The map with the turning path is displayed on a display screen in the vehicle.

Vehicle-mounted device, recording medium, and notification method

This vehicle-mounted device installed in a vehicle is provided with a communication unit that communicates with a mobile terminal; a vehicle information acquiring unit that acquires operation information of the vehicle; and a vehicle-mounted controller that, on the basis of an operating status of the vehicle-mounted device, transmits a first notification notifying the mobile terminal of the possibility that the vehicle has stopped to the mobile terminal via the communication unit and that, on the basis of the operation information of the vehicle, transmits a second notification notifying the mobile terminal that the vehicle has stopped to the mobile terminal via the communication unit.

System and method for communicating possible travel paths through head scanning and sound modulation

A method and system that provides navigational related audio or haptic feedback to a user traversing a route by mapping an initial route for a user to traverse, the initial route having paths and intersections; determining a current location of the user; inputting a route characteristic change of the initial route; determining possible paths associated with an intersection for the user to traverse when the current location of the user is within the predetermined distance of the intersection; ranking the determined possible paths based upon the initial route and the inputted route characteristic change; determining the head direction of the user when the current location of the user is within the predetermined distance of an intersection; determining which of the possible paths corresponds to the calculated head direction of the user; and providing an audio/haptic cue to the user based upon the ranking of the determined possible path corresponding to the determined head direction of the user.

Physical event triggering of virtual events

A method, system and computer program tie physical events to virtual events by analyzing motion information from a detecting device or analyzing contextual information, initiating a virtual event with a display device in response to detecting an impending change in center of mass motion of a user from analyzing the motion information or contextual information, and associating a virtual event with subsequent motion information from the detecting device.

Apparatus and methods of displaying navigation instructions

A device is disclosed for generating navigation instructions for display on a display device of a portable navigation device, comprising: means for accessing a repository storing digital map data pertaining to a navigable network along which the navigation device can travel; means for generating, for display on the display device, a three-dimensional perspective view of a model representative of the map data as though from a camera positioned at an elevation and pitch angle behind a current position of the portable navigation device, that is updated to follow the device as it travels along a planned route through the navigable network; and means for generating, in response to detecting that the current position of the navigation device is closer than a predetermined distance to a decision point in the planned route, a fast forward preview of the upcoming decision point by advancing the position of the camera for the three-dimensional perspective view along the planned route at a speed faster than the rate of travel of the current position of the device. Methods of operation of the device, and related computer software, are also disclosed.

TRANSITION OF NAVIGATION MODES FOR MULTI-MODAL TRANSPORATION

Systems and methods for improved transitioning and updating of navigations modes for multi-modal transportation routes are presented. In one embodiment, a method is provided that includes receiving a transportation route, which may include a first segment and a second segment. A first interface associated with the first segment may be displayed and may include a visual indicator of a rate of progress. A predicted travel time may be predicted, based on the rate of progress, to a starting location of the second segment. The visual indicator may be updated based on a comparison of the predicted travel time to a start time of the second segment.

Grouping maneuvers for display in a navigation presentation

Some embodiments of the invention provide several novel methods for generating a navigation presentation that displays a device navigating a route on a map. The method of some embodiments uses a virtual camera that, based on detected changes in the navigation context, dynamically modifies the way it captures portions of the map to produce different navigation scenes in the navigation presentation. To generate the navigation scenes, the method of some embodiments (1) identifies different sets of attributes that describe the different navigation contexts at different times during the navigation presentation, and (2) uses these different sets of attributes to identify different styles for operating the virtual camera. In some embodiments, the method uses an identified style to specify the virtual camera's positional attributes, which, in turn, define the portions of the map that the virtual camera identifies for rendering to produce several navigation scenes for a period of time (e.g., until the navigation context changes, or until the navigation presentation ends when the navigation context does not change again). During the navigation presentation, each time the navigation context changes, the identified set of attributes may change. This change, in turn, may cause the method of some embodiments to select a new style for operating the virtual camera. When the style for operating the virtual camera changes, the method of some embodiments modifies the way the virtual camera captures the portion of the map to render.

Overlaying additional information on a display unit

A method for calculating an overlay of additional information for a display on a display unit, in particular, a head-up display of a transportation vehicle or data glasses. The overlay of additional information supports the driver in the longitudinal control of a transportation vehicle. The position of an upcoming waypoint is detected, which is specified by the navigation system. When the observer transportation vehicle approaches the waypoint, an animation graphic is calculated, wherein the animation graphic has a grid shape. The animation graphic is calculated so that distance markers are inserted from the observer transportation vehicle to the waypoint, which permit estimation of the distance to the waypoint.

Systems and methods for selecting a POI to associate with a navigation maneuver

Systems and methods are provided for selecting points of interest (POIs) to include in navigation maneuvers presented by a navigation application of an electronic device. Navigation directions, including several maneuvers, are generated by a server device. Candidate POIs near locations corresponding to each of the maneuvers are identified and the server device receives requests from third parties that own each of the candidate POIs. The server device selects one of the candidate POIs for each maneuver based on the requests from the third parties. The server device provides the navigation directions, including an indication of the selected POI for a corresponding maneuver, to the client device of the user who requested the navigation directions.
