ELECTROMAGNETIC FLUID FILTER USING MAGNETOSTRICTIVE SENSORS
In at least one illustrative embodiment, an electromagnetic filter may include a transfer pipe and multiple electromagnetic filter elements positioned in an interior volume of the pipe. Each electromagnetic filter element includes a support comb, a solenoid coupled to the support comb, and multiple magnetic members arranged in a planar array positioned within an opening of the support comb. Each magnetic member may rotate about an end that is coupled to the support comb. The magnetic members may be magnetostrictive sensors and may include a biorecognition element to bind with a target microorganism. A method for fluid filtration includes coupling the electromagnetic filter between a fluid source and a fluid destination, energizing the solenoids of each electromagnetic filter elements, and flowing a fluid media through the transfer pipe of the electromagnetic filter. The fluid media may be liquid food such as fruit juice. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
INHIBITORS OF MICROBIALLY INDUCED AMYLOID
The present disclosure provides compounds useful for the prevention of amyloid formation and the treatment of amyloid related disorders, including synucleopathics such as Parkinson's Disease.
METHOD AND DEVICE FOR ASSESSING A STATUS OF A WOUND OF A PATIENT
The present invention relates to a method for assessing a status of a wound of a patient, comprising the steps of i. determining a concentration of one or more inflammatory markers in a sample from the wound, wherein the sample comprises or consists of wound fluid and the one or more inflammatory markers may indicate an inflammation within the wound, ii. determining a concentration of one or more bacterial markers in the sample, wherein the one or more bacterial markers may indicate a colonization of the wound with metabolically active bacteria, iii. assessing the status of the wound based on the concentrations of the one or more inflammatory markers and the one or more bacterial markers, wherein the status of the wound is assessed as being inflamed or not inflamed and as being colonized with metabolically active bacteria or not colonized with metabolically active bacteria. This diagnostic method allows a reliable, specific and detailed assessment of the status of the wound.
COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL DATA USING MANIFOLD AND A HYPERPLANE
A method of analyzing biological data containing expression values of a plurality of polypeptides in the blood of a subject. The method comprises: calculating a distance between a segment of a curved line and an axis defined by a direction, the distance being calculated at a point over the curved line defined by a coordinate along the direction. The method further comprises correlating the distance to the presence of, absence of, or likelihood that the subject has, a bacterial infection. The coordinate is defined by a combination of the expression values, wherein at least 90% of the segment is between a lower bound line and an upper bound line.
Amplifier System and Controls for Dielectrophoretic Tracking in Microfluidic Devices
Systems, methods, and devices are described herein for identifying, monitoring, isolating, or selecting a cell having a predefined characteristic in a mixed population of cells utilizing a combination of any one or more of iDEP, a region of localized field enhancement, a variable frequency electric field, a wide bandwidth amplifier, and/or an imaging apparatus.
SPECTROSCOPIC BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL CHARACTERIZATION
Systems and methods for characterizing biological specimens, which may involve identifying a cell type or state corresponding to a disease or health condition of a subject. A biological specimen is subjected to electromagnetic radiation for spectroscopic analysis such as Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to determine the relative abundance of proteins or amino acids in the cells, which is used in a comparison to previously stored relative abundance data of a database to automatically identifies at least one of cell type and/or cell state of the cells (or the disease/health state of the subject with the disease state including the possibility of virus infection, or drug susceptibility of a subject to bacteria or fungus). The method may also be employed with biological entities or cellular structures such as exosomes and even protein or nucleic acid fragments to determine disease states or health states of the subject.
Photoactivatable antimicrobial agents and therapeutic and diagnostic methods of using same
The present invention provides photosensitizer compounds for use in detecting beta-lactamase activity. Methods and kits that utilize the photosensitizer compounds of the invention for the detection of, quantitation of, and classification or typing of microbial beta-lactamases.
Engineered microbe-targeting molecules and uses thereof
Described herein are engineered microbe-targeting or microbe-binding molecules, kits comprising the same and uses thereof. Some particular embodiments of the microbe-targeting or microbe-binding molecules comprise a carbohydrate recognition domain of mannose-binding lectin, or a fragment thereof, linked to a portion of a Fc region. In some embodiments, the microbe-targeting molecules or microbe-binding molecules can be conjugated to a substrate, e.g., a magnetic microbead, forming a microbe-targeting substrate (e.g., a microbe-targeting magnetic microbead). Such microbe-targeting molecules and/or substrates and the kits comprising the same can bind and/or capture of a microbe and/or microbial matter thereof, and can thus be used in various applications, e.g., diagnosis and/or treatment of an infection caused by microbes such as sepsis in a subject or any environmental surface. Microbe-targeting molecules and/or substrates can be regenerated after use by washing with a low pH buffer or buffer in which calcium is insoluble.
NOVEL RECOMBINANT FACTOR C AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME, AND METHOD FOR MEASURING ENDOTOXIN
