A magnetic sensor of the present invention has an elongate element portion having a magnetoresistive effect and a pair of elongate soft magnetic bodies that are arranged along the element portion on both sides of the element portion with regard to a short axis thereof. Each soft magnetic body includes a central portion that is adjacent to the element portion from one end to another end of the element portion with regard to a long axis direction thereof and a pair of end portions that protrude from the central portion in the long axis direction. A width of at least one of the end portions gradually decreases in a direction away from the central portion in at least a part of the end portions in the long axis direction thereof.

Magnetic head comprising magneto-resistance effect element and side shields
A magnetic head includes a magneto-resistance effect element in the form of a multilayer film, a pair of shields between which the magneto-resistance effect element is interposed in the lamination direction of the layers of the magneto-resistance effect element and each functioning as an electrode, a pair of side shields with one of said side shields on each side of the magneto-resistance effect element in the direction perpendicular to the lamination direction of the magneto-resistance effect element interposed between the pair of shields, the side shields magnetically coupled to either of the pair of shields, and an anisotropy-application layer disposed adjacent to the shield magnetically coupled to the pair of side shields. The pair of shields, the magneto-resistance effect element, and the pair of side shields are exposed on the air bearing surface facing a recording medium. The anisotropy-application layer is not exposed on the air bearing surface and is provided at a position away from the air bearing surface.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic head includes first and second magnetic poles, and a stacked body provided between the first and second magnetic poles. The stacked body includes a first magnetic layer, a second magnetic layer provided between the first magnetic pole and the first magnetic layer, a third magnetic layer provided between the first magnetic pole and the second magnetic layer, a first nonmagnetic layer provided between the second and first magnetic layers, a second nonmagnetic layer provided between the third and second magnetic layers, and a third nonmagnetic layer provided between the first magnetic pole and the third magnetic layer. The second magnetic layer includes first and second magnetic regions. The second magnetic region is between the second nonmagnetic layer and the first magnetic region. The first magnetic region includes a first element. The second magnetic region includes the first element, and a second element.
Magnetoresistance effect element and heusler alloy
A magnetoresistance effect element and a Heusler alloy in which a state change due to annealing does not easily occur. The element includes a first ferromagnetic layer, a second ferromagnetic layer, and a non-magnetic layer positioned between the first ferromagnetic layer and the second ferromagnetic layer, in which at least one of the first ferromagnetic layer and the second ferromagnetic layer is a Heusler alloy in which a portion of elements of an alloy represented by Co.sub.2Fe.sub.αZ.sub.β is substituted with a substitution element, in which Z is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, Ga, Ge, and Sn, α and β satisfy 2.3≤α+β, α<β, and 0.5<α<1.9, and the substitution element is one or more elements selected from the group consisting of elements having a melting point higher than that of Fe among elements of Groups 4 to 10.
Current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistive element, precursor thereof, and manufacturing method thereof
Provided is a precursor of a current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistive element having a laminated structure of ferromagnetic metal layer/nonmagnetic metal layer/ferromagnetic metal layer, the precursor having a nonmagnetic intermediate layer containing a non-magnetic metal and an oxide in a predetermined ratio such that the distribution thereof is nearly uniform at the atomic level. Also provided is a current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistive element having a current-confinement structure (CCP) which has: a current confinement structure region made of a conductive alloy and obtained by heat-treating a laminated structure of a ferromagnetic metal layer and a nonmagnetic intermediate layer at a predetermined temperature; and a high-resistance metal alloy region containing an oxide and surrounding the current confinement structure region.
Magnetoresistance effect element
A magnetoresistance effect element is provided in which a MR ratio is not likely to decrease even at a high bias voltage. A magnetoresistance effect element according to an aspect of the present invention includes: a first ferromagnetic metal layer; a second ferromagnetic metal layer; a tunnel barrier layer that is provided between the first ferromagnetic metal layer and the second ferromagnetic metal layer, in which the tunnel barrier layer is formed of a non-magnetic oxide having a cubic crystal structure represented by a compositional formula A.sub.1-xA′.sub.xO, where A represents a divalent cation, and A′ represents a trivalent cation, and the number of A ions is more than the number of A′ ions in a primitive lattice of the crystal structure.
Recessed tape servo head to create an equipotential tape bearing surface
The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive comprising a tape head. The tape head comprises one or more data heads and one or more servo heads. Each servo head comprises a first shield, a first lead, a magnetoresistive sensor, a second lead, a second shield, and side shields. The magnetoresistive sensor is recessed from a media facing surface (MFS). The first lead is recessed from the MFS while the second lead and side shields are disposed at the MFS. A power supply is configured to apply a first electrical potential to the first and second shields, the side shields, and the second lead, and a second electrical potential to the first lead. The electrical design of each servo head is configured such that only one electric potential is exposed at the MFS, eliminating the possibility that a scratch will short the sensor.

A magnetoresistance effect element includes a underlayer, a protective layer, a laminated body located between the underlayer and the protective layer and including a first ferromagnetic layer, a non-magnetic layer, and a second ferromagnetic layer in order from a side closest to the underlayer, and an intermediate layer located between the underlayer and the first ferromagnetic layer, or between the second ferromagnetic layer and the protective layer, wherein, one ferromagnetic layer selected from the first ferromagnetic layer and the second ferromagnetic layer and be in contact with the intermediate layer is a Heusler alloy having a Co basis, and a main component of the intermediate layer is an element other than Co among elements constituting the Heusler alloy having the Co basis.
