A cosmetic composition suitable for topical application is provided. The cosmetic composition comprises: a safe and effective amount of a humectant; a safe and effective amount of a lipid bilayer structurant, and a safe and effective amount of a chaotropic agent. The chaotropic agent denatures the cross-linked proteinaceous layer sitting immediately above skin thereby increasing the amount of humectant and lipid bilayer structurant that enters the stratum corneum; the humectant binds together with water molecules and the lipid bilayer structurant knits together the lipid bilayers of the stratum corneum thereby preventing water loss.

Methods and compositions for stimulating the growth of hair are disclosed wherein said compositions include a cyclopentane heptanoic acid, 2-cycloalkyl or arylalkyl compound represented by the formula I

##STR00001## wherein the dashed bonds represent the presence or absence of a double bond which can be in the cis or trans configuration and A, B, Z, X, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are as defined in the specification and a penetration enhancer. Such compositions are used in stimulating hair growth of human or non-human animals.

A personal care composition comprising a cleansing phase comprising one or more cleansing surfactants comprising: i. a piroctone compound; ii. sodium benzoate; iii. a fragrance comprising a fragrance component selected from benzyl acetate, hexyl acetate, phenethyl alcohol, ethyl butyrate, eucalyptol, limonene, undecalactone, eugenol and mixtures thereof, in which the ratio of piroctone to sodium benzoate to the defined fragrance components iii) is from 1:1:1 to 1:130:130.10

The invention relates to a cosmetic process for caring for or making up keratin materials, comprising the topical application to the keratin materials of a cosmetic composition comprising a phosphonic polymer derived from the polymerization of: (a) 45% to 95% by weight of ethylenic monomer bearing an at least C.sub.8 linear or branched alkyl group; (b) 5% to 25% by weight of vinylphosphonic acid monomer; (c) 0 to 50% by weight of additional monomer chosen from linear or branched C.sub.1C.sub.6 alkyl (meth)acrylates, C.sub.6-C.sub.12 cycloalkyl (meth)acrylates, and polydimethylsiloxanes bearing a mono(meth)acryloyloxy end group, optionally combined with an additional compound chosen from polyamine compounds bearing several primary amine and/or secondary amine groups, aminosilanes, salts of divalent or trivalent metal ions, clays and metal oxides. A water-based cosmetic gel composition for topical application to the skin, having an anti-ageing, moisturising, brightening and revitalizing effect on the skin, is provided. The water-based cosmetic gel composition includes a combination of biomimetic peptides and, optionally, hyaluronic acid salt, panthenol, and one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of thickening agents, wetting agents, solubilizing agents, chelating agents, pH adjusting agents, preserving agents, and combinations thereof.
