Apparatuses, systems, and methods for ion traps
An ion trap apparatus is provided. The ion trap apparatus comprises two or more radio frequency (RF) rails formed with substantially parallel longitudinal axes and with substantially coplanar upper surfaces; and two or more sequences of trapping and/or transport (TT) electrodes with each sequence formed to extend substantially parallel to the substantially parallel longitudinal axes of the RF rails. The two or more RF rails and the two or more sequences of TT electrodes define an ion trap. The two or more sequences of TT electrodes are arranged into a number of zones. Each zone comprises wide matched groups of TT electrodes and at least one narrow matched group of TT electrodes. A wide TT electrode is longer and/or wider in a direction substantially parallel to the substantially parallel longitudinal axes of the RF rails than a narrow TT electrode.
Methods and apparatus for ion transfer by ion bunching
A mass spectrometry method comprises: receiving a stream of ions at an inlet end of an ion transport device; accumulating a first portion of the ion stream at a first electrical potential well at a first position within the ion transport device between the inlet and outlet ends; creating a generally descending potential profile within the ion transport apparatus between a second position and the outlet end and, simultaneously, creating a second potential well at a third position within the ion transport apparatus, the second position disposed between the first position and the inlet end, the third position disposed between the second position and the inlet end; and transporting the accumulated first portion of the ion stream from the first position to the outlet end under the impetus of the generally descending potential profile and, simultaneously, accumulating a second portion of the ion stream at the second potential well.

A mass spectrometer comprises an orifice plate having an orifice, a first multipole ion guide in a first chamber downstream of said orifice plate, said first multipole ion guide comprising a plurality of rods, and a second multipole ion guide in a second chamber downstream of said first chamber, said second multipole ion guide comprising a plurality of rods. A first ion lens is between the first and the second multipole ion guides. A third multipole ion guide is in a third chamber downstream of the second chamber, the third multipole ion guide comprises a plurality of rods. A second ion lens is between the second and third chambers. A tunable DC voltage source applies a tunable DC offset voltage to at least one of the above ion guide and ion lenses to increase an axial kinetic energy of the ions to cause at least one of declustering and/or fragmentation.
MASS ANALYSIS APPARATUSES AND METHODS
A device (1) for manipulating charged particles, the device comprising a series of electrodes (2, 3) that form a channel for transportation of the charged particles. A power supply unit (5, 6) provides a voltage to axially segmented bunching electrodes to create a potential well within the channel having one or more local minima between local maxima (50, 51). The well is translated along the channel. An axial extraction region (54) comprises electrodes defining an end of the channel. They receive a supply voltage to create a pseudo-potential within the channel such that the depth of the potential well varies according to the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of the charged particles transported therein and reduces as a local maxima of the potential well is translated axially towards the axial extraction region thereby to release the transported charged particles of different mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) at different respective times.
ION GUIDE ASSEMBLY HAVING MULTIPLE ION GUIDES
An ion guide assembly (2) is disclosed comprising: two planar mounting components (4); and first and second ion guides (6,8) mounted on the two planar mounting components such that the ion guides are spaced apart from each other, wherein at least one of the planar mounting components has an aperture (14) therethrough that is located between the positions on said at least one mounting component at which the first and second ion guides are mounted; and an ion optical device sized and configured to be inserted through the aperture in the planar mounting component and into the space between the first and second ion guides.
Method and ion guide assembly for modulating a stream of ions
The invention relates to a method for, in an ion guide (10), modulating a stream of ions according to a modulation function, wherein the stream of ions includes at least N different ion species, wherein N is at least 1. This ion guide (10) forms an ion guide path, wherein the ions of the stream of ions are conveyed along the ion guide path in a conveying direction to form the stream of ions. The ion guide (10) includes an ion gate (12) arranged at an ion gate position on the ion guide path, wherein the ion gate (12) is adapted to provide an open state for allowing the ions passing the ion gate position when being conveyed along the ion guide path and a closed state for preventing the ions from passing the ion gate position. The ion guide (10) further includes a first arrangement (13) of conveying electrodes (230) arranged along the ion guide path, the first arrangement (13) of conveying electrodes (230) extending over a first section of the ion guide path, wherein the first section of the ion guide path reaches from at least the ion gate position downstream to at least a transition position on the ion guide path, wherein the first arrangement (13) of conveying electrodes (230) is adapted for generating first travelling waves having a first travelling wave amplitude and travelling along the first section of the ion guide path at a first travelling wave velocity for conveying the ions along the first section of the ion guide path. Furthermore, the ion guide (10) includes a second arrangement (14) of conveying electrodes (240) arranged along the ion guide path, the second arrangement (14) of conveying electrodes (240) extending over a second section of the ion guide path, wherein the second section of the ion guide path reaches from the transition position downstream, wherein the second arrangement (14) of conveying electrodes (240) is adapted for generating second travelling waves having a second travelling wave amplitude and travelling along the second section of the ion guide path at a second travelling wave velocity for conveying the ions along the second section of the ion guide path. According to the method, the stream of ions is modulated with the ion gate (12) according to the modulation function and AC voltages are applied to the first arrangement (13) of conveying electrodes (230) for generating the first travelling waves and to the second arrangement (14) of conveying electrodes (240) for generating the second travelling waves for conveying the ions downstream of the ion gate (12<

The present invention relates to a reaction chamber (12) for an IMR-MS apparatus or a PTR-MS apparatus, comprising an essentially gaslight outer housing (14), comprising at least two ion lenses (16) with essentially constant orifice dimensions and/or at least two ion lenses (17) with different orifice dimensions arranged around the reaction region (20), and at least one at least partly gaslight sealing (19), characterized in that the ion lenses (16,17) are placed inside the essentially gaslight outer housing (14), wherein between at least two adjacent ion lenses (16,17) an at least partly gaslight sealing (19) is mounted, wherein the room between at least other two ion lenses (16, 17) is such to allow a gas flow through said room from the reaction region (20) into the outer space (21). The present invention further relates to a method to operate an apparatus according to the invention.
APPARATUSES AND METHODS FOR MERGING ION BEAMS
An ion beam lens and methods for combining ion beams are disclosed. Embodiments combine hyperthermal ion beams and can include layered three-dimensional electrodes with passageways through the electrodes, each electrode having a specified DC voltage and each passageway configured for passing an ion beam to an exit, the velocity vectors of the beams being primarily oriented along the lens' central axis upon exiting the passageways. Embodiments include nested electrode plates with curved ion beam passageways. In some embodiments each electrode plate has a charge different from the electrode plates adjacent to it, and in some embodiments every other electrode plate is charged with a first DC voltage and the remaining plates are charged with a second DC voltage different from the first DC voltage.
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING IONS BY ION PEAK COMPRESSION OR EXPANSION
A method and apparatus for separating ions according to a physicochemical property, such as ion mobility or mass-to-charge-ratio, is disclosed, comprising: repeatedly travelling a transient DC voltage along an ion guide; wherein the transient DC voltage has a first amplitude and first speed whilst it travels along a first region of the ion guide so as to urge ions having different values of said physicochemical property through said first region of the ion guide with different average speeds; and wherein, in a first mode, the transient DC voltage is travelled along a second region of the ion guide that is adjacent to said first region: (i) whilst having a second different amplitude; and/or (ii) at a second different non-zero speed; and/or (iii) at a substantially constant speed but with a different frequency to which it is repeatedly travelled along the first region; so that ions having a given value of said physicochemical property are urged through said second region of the ion guide at a different average speed than they are urged through the first region, thereby causing the ions to be spatially compressed or expanded as they pass from the first region of the ion guide to the second region.

In a mass spectrometer to transfer ions generated in an ion source 101 to a detector 106 through a vacuum chamber equipped with electrodes, the vacuum chamber includes a first vacuum chamber 107 and a second vacuum chamber 108 communicated by a pore 104 and an air flow containing ions introduced from the ion source 101 into the first vacuum chamber 107 is separated to an air flow 704 and an ion flow 703 by an ion guide 103 in the first vacuum chamber 107. The first vacuum chamber 107 has a current plate 113 to reduce mixing of the separated air flow 704 and ion flow 703.
