Photovoltaic Devices with Increased Efficiency and Methods for Making the Same
A photovoltaic device with increased efficiency and a method for making the same. The present invention provides a photovoltaic device including: a transparent substrate; a transparent conductive electrode layer disposed on the transparent substrate; an n-type layer disposed on the transparent conductive electrode layer; a chalcogen absorber layer disposed on the n-type layer; a p-type molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) interlayer disposed on the chalcogen absorber layer; and a conductive layer disposed on the interlayer. A photovoltaic device having a superstrate configuration with the order of the layers reversed is also provided. The present invention further provides methods for making the photovoltaic devices according to the present invention.

A method for producing a layer system for thin-film solar cells is described, wherein a) an absorber layer is produced, and b) a buffer layer is produced on the absorber layer, wherein the buffer layer contains sodium indium sulfide according to the formula Na.sub.xIn.sub.y-x/3S with 0.063≦x≦0.625 and 0.681≦y≦1.50, and wherein the buffer layer is produced, without deposition of indium sulfide, based on at least one sodium thioindate compound.

A method of fabricating a buffer layer of a photovoltaic device comprises: providing a substrate having a back contact layer disposed above the substrate and an absorber layer disposed above the back contact layer; depositing a metal layer on the absorber layer; and performing a thermal treatment on the deposited metal layer in an atmosphere comprising sulfur, selenium or oxygen, to form a buffer layer.

A method of making a semiconductor device includes forming a semiconductor material stack having a sodium at an atomic concentration greater than 1×10.sup.19/cm.sup.3, depositing a transparent conductive oxide layer over the semiconductor material stack, such that sodium atoms diffuse from the semiconductor material stack into the transparent conductive oxide layer, and contacting a physically exposed surface of the transparent conductive oxide layer with a fluid to remove sodium from the transparent conductive oxide layer.
