SINGLE-FREQUENCY LASER APPARATUS

A single-frequency laser apparatus comprises a mirror and a volume Bragg grating (VBG) reflector defining a laser cavity therebetween and an optical gain material for emitting and amplifying an intra-cavity beam in the laser cavity. The optical gain material comprises a transition-metal doped crystal such as a crystal doped with transition-metal ions selected from one or more of Ti.sup.3+ ions, Cr.sup.2+ ions, Cr.sup.3+ ions or Cr.sup.4+ ions. A reflectivity spectrum of the VBG reflector and an optical length of the laser cavity are selected so that a beam output from the laser cavity is a single-frequency output beam and/or includes only one longitudinal mode of the laser cavity. The laser apparatus may provide a robust, compact, low cost, high-power wavelength adjustable (from approximately 650 to 950 nm), narrow linewidth (<100 kHz), single frequency laser source which is suitable for a wide range of applications from laser sensing, spectroscopy, and high precision frequency metrology sectors.

An optical resonator including: a laser medium that is disposed between a pair of reflection members, and emits emitted light that has been excited by excitation light that has been predetermined; and a wavelength band limiting element that is disposed on a side of emission of the emitted light between the pair of reflection members, includes two reflection flat faces that are orthogonal to an optical axis of the laser medium, and limits a wavelength band of the emitted light, in which the wavelength band limiting element is disposed in a position that prevents a resonance component outside an intended wavelength range of the wavelength band limiting element from being generated between a reflection member on a laser beam emission side from among the pair of reflection members and the wavelength band limiting element.

A gas laser apparatus includes an enclosure, a window holder, a window, and a sealing member. The window holder further having an extending surface located on the side toward which reflected light travels, the reflected light being reflected off the window, the extending surface being continuous with the end surface and extending in a direction away from the window, the extending surface irradiated with the reflected light. A line is obtained by symmetrically folding back the optical axis of the reflected light at the position, on the extending surface, that is irradiated with the reflected light with respect to a reference line passing through the irradiated position and perpendicular to the extending surface. The line 602 extends across a normal to the window in the direction from the extending surface toward the window from the side facing the outer circumference of the window toward the center axis of the window.

MINIATURE SINGLE-LONGITUDINAL-MODE DIODE-PUMPED SOLID-STATE LASERS

Systems, methods, and other embodiments for a new compact narrowband diode-pumped solid-state laser device enabled by Volume Bragg Grating (VBG) technology and capable of operating at the watt or higher output power level. This laser is stable, operates in a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) output mode, and with a single-narrowband (<1 kHz FWHM) longitudinal mode with acceptable relative intensity noise (RIN) performance from 1-100 GHz. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the TEM output mode is a TEM.sub.00 Gaussian output mode.

LASER APPARATUS AND MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF

A technique which is suitable in joining an end surface of a laser medium to a transparent heat sink for maintaining thermal resistance therebetween low and avoiding large thermal stress from acting on the laser medium is to be provided. An end coat is provided on the end surface of the laser medium, a same-material layer constituted of a same material as the heat sink is provided on a surface of the end coat, a surface of the same-material layer and an end surface of the heat sink are activated in a substantially vacuum environment, and those activated surfaces are bonded in the substantially vacuum environment. A laser apparatus having low thermal resistance between the laser medium and the heat sink and high transparency at a joint interface therebetween, and no large thermal stress acting on the laser medium is thereby obtained.

A method for manufacturing an optical element is a method for manufacturing an optical element in which laser light is transmitted, reciprocated, or reflected, and the method includes a first step of obtaining a bonded element formed by subjecting a first element part and a second element part, both being transparent to laser light, to surface activated bonding with a non-crystalline layer interposed therebetween; and after the first step, a second step of crystallizing at least a portion of the non-crystalline layer by raising the temperature of the bonded element. In the second step, the temperature of the bonded element is raised to a predetermined temperature that is lower than the melting points of the first element part and the second element part.

NOVEL PASSIVELY Q-SWITCHED LASER

Passively Q-switched lasers and short wave infrared (SWIR) electro-optical systems including such lasers. A passively Q-switched laser may include a gain medium (GM) having a stimulated emission cross section σ.sub.SE, a saturable absorber (SA) having an absorption cross section (σ.sub.a) which is less than three times the σ.sub.SE of the GM, and an optical resonator within which the GM and the SA are positioned, the optical resonator comprising a high reflectivity mirror and an output coupler, wherein at least one of the high reflectivity mirror and the output coupler comprises a curved mirror, directing light within the optical resonator such that an effective cross-section of a laser mode within the SA (A.sub.SA) is smaller than a cross-section of a laser mode within a Rayleigh length of the pump (A.sub.GM).

Laser-Driven Light Source with Electrodeless Ignition

An electrodeless laser-driven light source includes a laser that generates a CW sustaining light. A pump laser generates pump light. A Q-switched laser crystal receives the pump light generated by the pump laser and generates pulsed laser light at an output in response to the generated pump light. A first optical element projects the pulsed laser light along a first axis to a breakdown region in a gas-filled bulb comprising an ionizing gas. A second optical element projects the CW sustaining light along a second axis to a CW plasma region in the gas-filled bulb comprising the ionizing gas. A detector detects plasma light generated by a CW plasma and generates a detection signal at an output. A controller generates control signals that control the pump light to the Q-switched laser crystal so as to extinguish the pulsed laser light within a time delay after the detection signal exceeds a threshold level.

A fiber laser amplifier system including a first dual-clad delivery fiber receiving a signal beam and a pump beam, a doped amplifying fiber coupled to the first delivery fiber and receiving the signal beam and the pump beam, and amplifying the signal beam using the pump beam, and a second dual-clad delivery fiber coupled to the amplifying fiber and receiving the amplified signal beam and the pump beam. The system also includes an endcap having an input facet and an output facet. The input facet is coupled to the second delivery fiber and receives the amplified signal beam and the pump beam, and the output facet is configured to pass the amplified signal beam and reflect the pump beam back onto the second delivery fiber to be directed back to the doped amplifying fiber.
