The example method also includes extending a transmission for an extended period of time based on the beam change. Additionally, the method includes applying a windowing function to the transmission during the extended period of time.

Techniques are disclosed for detecting obstruction of a device's antenna(s) and then changing an operation of the device. A transmission time at which an antenna of an electronic device transmitted a signal can be identified. A response signal can be detected that was received at a receiver of the electronic device subsequent to the transmission time. Based on the response signal and on the transmission time, one or more response-signal characteristics can be determined. Based on the one or more response-signal characteristics, it can be determined that the antenna or that another antenna of the electronic device is at least partly blocked from emitting or receiving signals. In response to determining that the antenna is at least partly blocked, a changed type of operation can be identified, and the changed type of operation can be performed.

Techniques for process based antenna configuration are described, and may be implemented via a wireless device to identify different usage scenarios and to adapt antenna configurations to optimize wireless performance based on the scenarios. For instance, the described techniques enable a wireless device to be calibrated for wireless communication by identifying different obstruction states of a wireless device that correspond to ways that the wireless device is held (e.g., grasped) by a user in different scenarios. The obstruction states are then correlated to antenna positions in the wireless device to prioritize (e.g., activate) antennas that are relatively unobstructed, such as by activating unobstructed antennas and/or deactivating obstructed antennas. Further, calibration can take into specific processes (e.g., applications) and specific users to calibrate an optimize wireless performance based on ways in which a user typically interacts with a process.

Channel Estimation for Configurable Surfaces

The present disclosure relates to channel estimation, at a receiving device of a communication system employing a (re)configurable surface. The channel estimation includes beamforming search to obtain trained reflection coefficients of the configurable surface and an angle of arrival, AoA, of the signals at the receiving device. Then, based on the configurable surface and the obtained AoA at the receiving device, reflection coefficients of the configurable surface are derived for an ideal channel portion between the transmitting device and the configurable surface. According to a relation between the trained reflection coefficients and the estimated reflection coefficients, the estimation of the characteristics of a channel between the transmitting device and the configurable surface is performed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes: an antenna switch to receive a first radio frequency (RF) signal from a first antenna and a second RF signal from a second antenna and controllable to output a selected one of the first and second RF signals; an RF circuit to receive and process the first and second RF signals; at least one mixer to downconvert the first and second RF signals to first and second baseband signals; and an antenna diversity control circuit to receive sub-symbol portions of a first plurality of symbols of the first baseband signal and sub-symbol portions of a second plurality of symbols of the second baseband signal, and control the antenna switch to output one of the first and second RF signals, based at least in part on one or more of the sub-symbol portions of the first and second pluralities of symbols.
